Hello all- I am seriously considering attending Ken Mattingly's speech in DC next month. It seems like the speech and events are all free so it would really only be an investment of time. The thought of snapping a photo with him and possibly obtaining a signature are very tempting. I recall the post about Mattingly's recent appearance in Alabama in which with patience, some CS'ers were lucky enough to meet Mattingly after the event and get some autographs. Has anyone met him since? Anyone have any luck? Was anyone else thinking about making the same trip? Thanks for any of your thoughts- Jay [This message has been edited by 4allmankind (edited September 20, 2005).] |

Do you have any details or a web site for that event? I tried the October sightings page but it doesn't seem to be working at the current time.

I signed up for the conference and was able to make a personalized schedule on-line. However, the online form didn't have the Mattingly keynote listed. I'm not sure why.As for other events I did sign up for the Networking Reception & Awards Dinner w/Jim Garvin, NASA's chief scientist. He's there to discuss the benefits from further exploration of the Moon and Mars. Back in 1989 while he was still a project scientist I arranged a public lecture at which he spoke about Venus and the Magellan Mission. So it will be good seeing him again. |

Tom Mattingly gave an interesting talk. One thing he described that I don't recall hearing about before was his description of sunrise from lunar orbit. Said that the dark abyss absent of star light indicating the position of the moon is suddenly and momentary ringed with light scattering along the limb of the moon followed by a bright "headlight" popping up.Below are links to two of my items Adm. Mattingly was kind enough to sign. I think they're exquisite examples of priceless personal items with next to zero commercial value. On February 27, 1972 on a family vacation I begged my parents to skip a day at Disney World and tour the Cape. Here is my Mother and I standing in front of Apollo 16 sitting on the pad: http://tinypic.com/ejy1p4.jpg And here I am with Dad at the pad: http://tinypic.com/ejy3ki.jpg [It was possible to date the photos because our Cape visit was the same day that Pioneer 10, the first mission to Jupiter, had been scheduled for departure. I talked my parents into staying in the area for the launch. Unfortunately, the launch was scrubbed, but somehow I managed to talk them into returning the next night following a full day at Disney World. It was scrubbed again as well as the following night. Pioneer 10 finally lifted off on March 2, by which time we were in Tampa.]

Hi Glint, We met at the NAA speech at Gettysburg this Memorial Day as I called to the crowd, "Any CollectSpace members here?"I find it neat and meaningful to have aviators and astronauts sign items that are family related to us . . . photos of me and the astronaut that will remain in our family's history . . . photos that are personalized to us. I listen intently to their lectures and speeches, and when I get a chance to ask a question, my curiousity about a situation is often answered. Glad you got to attend. Garry |

Mattingly really is a good speaker. I would have loved to hear more about his A16 mission rather then his on-the-ground activities related to A13. He seemed to be quite comfortable on stage. He was great at the signing as well. Very easy to speak with in the brief moments I was getting his signature. Jay |

Garry, I remember you and was glad you spoke up. That didn't happen at the Mattingly appearance. quote: Originally posted by 4allmankind: I would have loved to hear more about his A16 mission rather then his on-the-ground activities related to A13.
Yes, me too. Within a ten month period I've seen Fred Haise, Gene Kranz, and Mattingly and each of them naturally talked about A13. But Haise and Mattingly spent quite a bit of time talking about the movie when the real thing is a lot more interesting, in my opinion. I e-mailed some photos of the Washnigton lectures given by Mattingly on 10/13 and the 10/4 Yeager lecture to the sightings page but haven't seen either yet. In the meantime here's a link to a tight closeup of Adm. Mattingly that I snapped during the talk: http://tinypic.com/el8mmh.jpg |
