Just received a personal email from Bill J. over near KSC area and he says that Orlando's Grissom Parkway was closed due flooding from Hurricane Wilma and that 10 inches of rain had been dumped on Melbourne,FL - just down coast from KSC.KSC is closed at moment.

Additional hurricane info follows, as the harsh bands are beginning to start up. A "tornadic front" last night ( which had earlier brought a tornado to Cocoa Florida to the south ) proceeded toward the KSC Visitor's Center, but I haven't gotten word of any damage yet. I just learned that Max Brewer Bridge, part of the northern access for KSC workers, is now closed after a wind blown boat crashed into it resulting in structural damage to the bridge. Winds are now (11:45 am local time) getting up to 60 mph, they have swung to a cold-blowing north in the past half hour as Wilma moves outward, Grissom Parkway in Titusville is closed from flooding, Melbourne has had 10 inches of rain. A sidelight is a link to a new webcam from Cocoa Beach just south of KSC, now showing the hurricane's force. It can be focused on the landmark Cocoa Beach Pier, to the right in the field of view. No major damage reported at spaceport quote:
NASA's multibillion dollar space shuttle fleet, twin launch pads and other facilities Kennedy Space Center appear to have survived Hurricane Wilma without suffering major damage, officials said today.... A tornado touched down briefly near the southern entrance to the space center on North Merritt Island about 10 a.m., and a funnel cloud was spotted near Haulover Canal an hour later but did not touch down.

Interesting, in citation above,
the 94mph wind recorded at one of the shuttle pads, and 76mph on the 400' weather tower near VAB.
Local tv station reported Max Brewer Bridge may be closed for a month. Although the station perhaps incorrectly reported that a hurricane blown yacht caused the damage. Most attribute it to a construction barge that had been moored to adjoining fishing pier, which, sadly, was in renovations before the moored barge pulled a small section of the pier down. Barge is now submerged on the North of Max Brewer, with the 7th of the 40 columns on the northwest side of the bridge knocked out of place. One or two sailboats also impacted bridge and are total losses. A Coast Guard helicopter hovered extremely tightly all along the length of the bridge this morning, with state/county officials taking part in inspections by boat as well.KSCVC re-opening Wednesday. Surprised it was closed today (but that was good news for AHOF -- KSCVC officials set up turn-around lines for the masses of visitors, individually helping each carload, and recommending they visit AHOF). They insisted there no damage to KSCVC or rockets there, but said minor clean up of blown debris was necessary. Also good seeing no damage to Mercury atop south gate's Redstone, refurbished after last year's hurricanes (I believe a member here had posted photos of the refurbished capsule?). The gullies along the road there were quite flooded, though, and the ones along the NASA causeway looked like full, flowing rapids today. |

This was sent me from Bill J. near KSC for posting to cS:-"Bridge Accessing Canaveral Seashore / KSC North Closed" Anyone with travel plans to KSC area, take note. It is now official. Orlando's Channel 6 has reported that Max Brewer Bridge will be closed for about one month or more following damage from hurricane Wilma. This negates earlier speculation that the bridge might have been opened for single lane traffic. Tourists should note that this main access out to Canaveral National Seashore, with it's great views of the launch pads, will now need to use the Seashore's other access about 14 miles up from Max Brewer on U.S. 1 to the north. Or on I-95, take Oakhill exit, about 11 miles north of the 406 / Garden St exit in Titusville. Also, KSC says that a few panels have once again, in this latest hurricane, been ripped from the VAB. The Launch Control Center has a bit of damage as well.

Since only one source reported such a long time for Max Brewer's reopening, the accuracy of the above seemed questionable. But local officials are verifying that the DOT indeed estimated a 1 month closure. Only two pilings had heavy damage from the barge incident, but the bridge was already due to be replaced (it has an incredibly old 1949 date plate).

Max Brewer is now OPEN. Good news for space fans/workers, wildlife refuge/seashore visitors, fishers alike. Month long est had entailed pouring concrete for new pilings. Alternative approach was deemed safe, drilling through deck with the existing pilings. Bringing up submerged barge is in contract, no word when.Also, should've been 500 grand not million, of course. Bridge replacement will be 42 million, slated for 2010. Just as our shuttle fleet may be winding down. | |
