Will the shuttle be delayed again? An early announcement has said that the RTF committee has stated that NASA has yet to complete several of the requirements necessary to return to flight.

The announcement said that the flight could be delayed past the July date.

Ben Cooper posted news of the RTF Task Group's findings to the thread Debris Verification Review.

NASA will announce the target launch date for STS-114 on Thursday.

The Stafford-Covey Return To Flight Task ( Group (SCRTFTG) did not have the responsibility of recommending when to launch; rather if NASA had met all the recommendations that the Columbia Accident Investigation Board put forth in their report.

The SCRTFTG held their final public meeting today and reported that they could not sign off on three CAIB recommendations, in part because the conditions by which they were made have changed. CAIB assumed the shuttle would fly past 2010, which it is not.

Further, tile repairs techniques have not advanced to the point that they could say that task had been completed. (NASA already announced they would be flying 114 without tile repair capability).

As Ben pointed out, Covey today said that it would not benefit the program to delay the launch. That NASA needed Discovery to fly in order to learn whether the improvements implemented work.

Rob

The local TV media made the announcement and simplified it a little too much.

I guess you just can't trust the media. The next thing you know they will be announcing that JFK, Jr. slept with Princess Diana.

Jeez.

I think the way some websites are handling this-- "Panel FAILS NASA!"-- is a little biased against what they actually said today. They presented both sides, saying that while they failed to meet all, they did try on those last three and they even commended them for it.

SpaceflightNow (not to bias my opinion here) put it a little better:
http://www.spaceflightnow.com/shuttle/sts114/050627rtftg/

He points out as well that they "failed" on those three, but immediately goes on to show that they presented another side to the coin.
