Anyone besides myself and Mike Meyer attending the Sy Libergott/Clint Howard appearance at Cosmosphere this Saturday 5/7/05?

How about Scott Carpenter and opening of new Early Space Gallery Saturday 6/18/05? Rodrigo Duque has told me he is coming.

Charley Duke in Wellington KS Saturday 5/28/05?

Always anxious to meet and remeet cS'ers, and have informal get togethers. My house in Wichita (on the way to Cosmosphere) is always available.

Post here, or email me direct.

As Steve mentioned, I'm going to Carpenter's signing. I won't be able to go the other Kansas events, but I am also looking forward to meeting members.

Hi Steve.

My daughter and I are looking forward to seeing you and everyone else at the Cosmosphere this Saturday. We have the IMAX show at 11, the planetarium show at noon, and Dr. Goddard's lab at 1pm. After that we will hang around until we meet Clint and Sy then we are staying for the Apollo 13 IMAX at 5pm.

I hope we can find you guys there. I am over 6' tall and my 11 year old daughter is somewhat tall also. Both of us wear glasses. I will probably have on blue jeans and gray Starmaster Portable Telescopes T-shirt. That should be easy to see.

I just might take the 28th off and go to Wellington. I have never meet Charlie. I mentioned it to my daughter and she really wants to go.

I have a signed copy of Charlie's book and I have his signature in another book and on a print. Do you think he is going to sign anything? I bet my daughter would love to have him sign an print for her.

We had a great time at the Cosmosphere Saturday. My daughter and I arrived at 10:15am and just as we were walking from our car to the front door a van drove past giving us our first "sighting" of Sy. He was in the passenger seat of the van. I pointed him out to my 11 year old daughter. I told her that I thought that was Sy. She said that it was. We watched him leave the Cosmosphere hoping he would look our way so we could give him a wave. He did not look our way so we went on in. I had purchased advanced tickets so we did not have to wait in line. We asked if Sy had just left and they said that he did. Oh Well, we knew he would be back.

We saw Forces of Nature in the IMAX then the planetarium show and then Dr. Goddard's Lab. For those who have never see Dr. Goddard's Lab I recommend it. They dip large cotton balls in liquid oxygen then set it on fire. They squirt "secret rocket fuel" in a large Culligan water bottle then place the bottle in a guide and then they stick a match up to the neck of the water bottle and light the rocket fuel. The "rocket" blasts down the guide. That is a fantastic demonstration of how a rocket engine works. Later they demonstrate how blast vanes and gimbling controls a rocket in flight. The show lasts almost an hour and is a great introduction into the basics of rocket engines.

After that we walked through the Hall of Space Museum. The Hall of Space Museum takes the visitors from the V-1 and V-2s through he ASTP. The center section of the Museum is under construction right now so we had to jump from Kennedy's speeches after the flight of Freedom 7 to the Apollo Section. It was nice to say hello to old friends like the Apollo 13 Odyssey and to see Gunther Wendt's signature on the White Room display. Gene Cernan and Jim Lovell's space suits are favorites of mine also. I had to stand in front of the Lunar Lander and wonder just how they got it in and out of the Museum. I was glad to see that it was back. My daughter and I also stood near the leg with the ladder on it and thought about Pete's "That might have been a small one for Neil but it was a big one for me" statement. By then it was about 2:55. Sy and Clint were supposed to start signing at 3 so we headed back upstairs.

When we got there Sy and Clint were already signing and the line probably had about 50 people in it. We jumped in line and about 30 minutes later we were talking with Sy and Clint. I already had a signed copy of Sy's book but I took it so I could have Sy personalize it to me. We spoke for a few minutes and Sy answered some questions. My daughter is reading Rocket Boys and she wanted to know if Sy had ever met Homer Hickam. Sy explained that he had not. I had Clint sign Sy's book because he played Sy in Apollo 13 and because Clint wrote one of the forwards in the book. I asked Clint where he lived and I think he said Burbank. I do remember that it was in California. I thanked him for coming to Kansas and he said it had been a treat for him. Clint explained that he was an avid golfer and that Hutchinson had a great golf course. He said he had played earlier that weekend. I asked who won the match and he said that he did. I checked the line and it was probably still 50 people long. I was wanting to get a photo with Sy and Clint but I did not want to hold up the line either. I told them that I would like to come back later and get that photo and Clint said that would be great.

I sat down near the line and I saw two people talking. One was holding a Code 3 Apollo spacecraft with a signature on it. I was curious who had signed it so I got up and went over to look. These two guys were talking and I did not want to interrupt them so I took a quick look at it and stepped away. Richard Gordon had signed it. One of these guys stepped away and the other looked at me and asked if I were Mike. I had mentioned what I would be wearing that day and Steve O'Leary ( I hope I got that right ) introduced himself. He was still in line so I chatted until he got near Sy's table then I stepped back. At that time the other guy, Steve Smith, came up and introduced himself to me. We talked about his Code 3 Apollo spacecraft, his trip to Burbank, his slide rule, and his wife. I got to meet her to. Now I know why Steve is so happy. Both of them were a treat to meet. By this time it is almost 4:30. The signing was scheduled to end at 5pm. The line was still long but people were starting to line up for the Apollo 13 IMAX show which started at 5pm. Steve had told me that the show was sold out. We wanted to get good seats so we got in line for the show. From where we were standing we could see Sy and Clint. They signed books and they had people waiting in line right up to 5pm. My guess is that the trip was a success for Sy and Clint and for everyone that wanted to purchase copies of Sy's book. As Sy and Clint walked out at 5pm Clint was jokingly shaking his hand and wrist to get the circulation flowing again.

The IMAX version of Apollo 13 was OK. The Cosmosphere's dome is small so the edges of the screen warped or bent some of the auction there but it was still an enjoyable show. People clapped at the end of the movie when the blackout was finally broken after 4 minutes. It was great watching that show knowing that we had talked with Sy and Clint and visited the actual Odyssey that same day. We went back to the Museum after the show for a short visit then headed home. We got home about 11pm that night. It was a long day but it was a good one also.

That sounds like fun Mike. The Cosmosphere is a wonderful place, I can't wait to go June 18th to meet Scott Carpenter and Steve Smith. I know it'll be a blast. I hope to see you there too Mike and anyone else that is going!

Mike, I took some photos at the Cosmosphere event and realized when I arrived back home and started going thru them that I had a photo of you and your daughter standing at Sy's table talking to him while he was signing your book. Let me know how to send you a couple of copies. Steve O'Leary

That sounds great. I left my daughter in line to take some photos of Sy but other people kept getting in the way so I gave up. I was planning on trying later but that never happened. I would be thankful for those photos.
