I was doing a search in the CS archives tonight when I came across and was reminded of a little 'tradition' here. Back up to and including STS-107, for each launch through 2001 and 2002, there was always a topic started by someone, sometimes me, asking who was planning on attending the next shuttle launch.

So..who exactly is planning on being there this May? Maybe we can arrange some sort of collectSPACE get-together.

I of course wouldn't miss it for the world!

I'll be there. A crewmember has invited my wife and I, and we've already sent back our RSVP details (launch only). Travel plans will be made once the launch date has been fixed.

I will be - and for all those not able to attend, collectSPACE will be providing live coverage, interviews and even our own webcam view from the NASA press site.

WONDER IF SUCH THINGS HAVE EVER BEEN DONE BEFORE, or is it a "new frontier" for cS?!!! Especially the web cam idea, WONDERFUL! Welcome back to FL in advance, Robert!
Ejectr, like your style. And Colin sounds great, I made a note about your authorship, which you had the nice reference to on the thread about the memorials. Looked up today to see your variety of "heavyweight" material! But McAuliffe book sounds nice, really want to go after Fallen Astronauts first, though.

Not through collectSPACE, but I have produced live mission coverage and webcasts before. The largest such undertaking was for STS-95, when I hosted and produced the webcast sponsored by Microsoft. At the same launch, I organized the webchat (when such things were popular) for Yahoo.

Our coverage for STS-114 will be different from what I have done before and more details will be shared closer to launch.

Hi Guys,
Count hubby Ted and myself in to see the launch. We are coming to FL from Tuesday,24th,May-till 7th,June.05. Whether the window has been delayed-once we are in the sunshine state-maybe I can arrange a TIME AND PLACE WITH YOU ALL- I am not taking my laptop-so cannot post to this forum. nearer the time-please contact to arrange something.
We are staying in a friends villa off the US 192-on the US27- and are going to either the Gulf Coast,or Space Coast-for 4 days later on.
Will be great to see you all.
We have camcorder,and a video cam,good photos?
Regards from Brenda.

Maybe I'll get lucky on my third launch viewing attempt? I'll wait a bit longer before deciding, then I'll see how far the launch date slips!

Tom,
I so sorry about your record! Unfortunately, things like that happen.
I will definitely be there for Discovery's launch. I hate to rub salt into the wound but, thus far, my record is 7-0, including one scrub which launched the following day, (it's always good to add an extra day!).
I brought a few family members for the early morning launch of STS-104 Atlantis back in '01 and now I'm gathering them and others who have never seen a shuttle launch up close for the next one in May.
I'm no 'good luck charm'(!), but since this next launch will be the first since STS-107 and with over two years of preparation, I feel Discovery will be flying high into space right on schedule!

Count me (and my wife) in as well. We even thought of hosting a launch party get-together, spacegeek visit, or something in celebration of getting Shuttle/ISS astronauts back into orbit. Perhaps we (my company) can co-sponsor with CS.com, ASF, any others(?), etc. a function here on Florida's Space Coast the same week that STS-114 is scheduled. How many people would be interested in attending something like this?

Hi Ken,
You can count ted and Brenda in- plus 2 new recruits-son Ian and girlfriend Lynsey- only if the LAUNCH WINDOW is after the 24th,May.05, we are staying in a villa on US27-booked 1 week -but can easy alter it to
more days- that is if lift off is delayed.
Would be great-what you suggested, only hope we are not too late in arriving in Florida,
All the best to you and the wife-hope to see you again,
regards from Brenda and Ted.

Hi All-
Some of you have asked- can I come earlier.
No-hubby is working, From 30th,may till the 11th,June.05 IT IS THE FAMOUS TT RACES- MOTORBIKES-racing round a 37 mile course on this island, So most schoools, colleages, roads, public transport and most other things ar not running or closed for 2 weeks, ITS CHAOS, WE NEED TO GET AWAY-Hence the sunshine state- cannot wait.
Thanks everone for asking.
cheers from Brenda, have a glass of red aussie wine with me---------

Ken, sounds like a great idea. But, we cannot really plan it well in advance. I think we should say that assuming it sticks with May 15 we will plan to meet at a certain place and time.

Let's leave it open in case it delays.

Adam, my best take on the possibility of the launch date sliping is that a long delay would be known about at least a month or so prior to the launch attempt. Therefore, I would have to guess that any delays that occurred in late April or May would be to a new date withen the 3 week launch window available before the launch would have to be delayed until July.
For the record, I have been to one shuttle launch ( STS-51-A in 1984 )and the launch was delayed, during the T - 20 minute hold, 24 hours due the weather. I saw Discovery launch the next morning. At this point I am unable to make a commitment to attend, however I'd be interested in how a collectspace get together for a launch is set up with the appropriate car passes, etc.

Robert, the "webchat" you helped was the good ol' typing variety, right? ( funny, webchats aren't the rage anymore, are they). And the earlier live coverage you mentioned was webcast type, is that correct? I know web's your specialty, but I'm thinking of your NASA TV activities --and your tv appearances!-- wondering if possibly you helped broadcast coverage too. We've taken in many launches on the Space Coast, but its GREAT seeing the excitement building amongst space fans, to see the anticipation amongst good cS'ers. Thanks to Robert. and to Ben's post).

Now if RP covered for Microsoft, couldn't you get Bill Gates to pick up F Bell's property for us :-) . [ Another p.s., I recall a cS member for a while who worked AT the space center & gave messages from "the inside," is that individual still around? ]

And Robert ( whatever your previous coverage experiences have been ) . . . Your announcement is EXCITING, great to see an added dimension coming on to cS with the special advent of Discovery. We're all looking forward to her launch, and to sharing it here. Thanx again Robert (and that fellow who wouldn't miss it for the world, BEN! )

Wonder what crew member Colin's wife got an invite from? A personal connection in the launch!

Mike, I think Ken meant at a time before the launch. You certainly articulated factors in the launch time well, a good sum up.

Its interesting the different date thoughts on when Discovery will rise. Brenda seems confident of May 24 -- or LATER! I can't help thinking about this fact that they are still (I bleieve) deliberating tile repair methods.

BUT ROB is bold, hope your energy with your string of successes keeps it on track. A delay just to the 24th would be good! (ps rob, finally checked Lattimer bk. also wonder if you're rounding up loved ones for this launch

Oh forgive me, Colin. Yes, maybe that was you discussing in the forums here before how the AUS papers just call him Andy. Wake up Bill! Glad you'll be coming to see his next launch. Your first name brings a good segue. To a Colin in Eng., the father of another astro with a great accent. Colin Foale, Michael's father & a space author.

Now BRENDA (now that you gave away Colin's "semi-secret!")(you win a candy bar) did UK PAPERS CALL MICHAEL BY HIS FIRST NAME, if you were following such things back then? Wonder where the Foale's live.

But Brenda does Ted know that you get a little WILD on these boards!!? Well, we'll all keep it secret. Looked up just a little about I'm A Celeb, nice your son is going with an eye-catcher! Guess your cottage will be sort of out by Disney? But will be great to see you in May.
You mentioned the races on Isle of Man, I wanted to bring my lady to Daytona this weekend (missed it for Val. Day), but then its Dytona500, will be madhouse up there, so later!

Yes I too would like to meet our own space hero, Robert. And Brenda, I saw a pic of Ben somewhere, I think it was in his Delta 4H launch pics from Dec, seems like a fine young man.
The Aussie red wine item has now come full circle! thanks Brenda & Colin ;-)

To expand somewhat on what I said, in my February 15 reply, Ben has informed me that the rollout to the launchpad for STS-114 is schedualed to take place on March 25. It would be my opinion that any further pushback of Return to Flight would take place prior to the rollout. I would think that once the rollout takes place that NASA would be ready to go with the targeted launch date. Any delays that might take place after the rollout would probably be for something unexpected ( like mechanical breakdown and replacement, weather, etc.).

All times are CT (US)
