From the Salt Lake City Tribune...

Space veterans to converge on SLC
by Greg Lavine

quote:
For a week in October, Salt Lake City will boast the world's highest concentration of humans who have orbited the Earth.

Utah is scheduled to host the Association of Space Explorers' 19th annual international Planetary Congress from Oct. 9 to 15.

Former U.S. Sen. Jake Garn, who shot into space in 1985 aboard the space shuttle Discovery, helped announce the event on Thursday. Garn, a lifetime member of the group, said events will include astronauts and cosmonauts visiting schools across the state.
The article also mentions a hope by the ASE that Yang Liwei will attend and an expectation that Alexei Leonov will be there. This will be the second Congress to be held in the U.S. and the first to be held twice in the same country.

Considering that Leonov is a member of their Executive Committee, their hopes of him being present are likely to be fulfilled.

The 1st ASE Congress in the US took place in 1992, at Washington, D.C.

They had to cancel two previous congresses, one scheduled for Italy, the other scheduled for Russia. I guess they wanted a safe bet this time and a rich and wealthy country to host the event ...
