General Everest was a former WWII combat veteran and famed USAF test pilot at Muroc/Edwards AFB. Pete was the only pilot to fly the X-1, X-1A, X-1B, X-2, X-3, X-4, X-5, XF-92A and XB-51... an incredible achievement in itself considering when one drives around Edwards AFB many of the roads are named after Pete's peers.

I never had the honor of meeting Pete Everest though I was lucky enough to correspond with him a few times and even more fortunate to have him sign all the photographs and postal covers that I ever sent to him.

Pete Everest sadly made his final flight on Friday October 1st and will be missed by all in the flight test community and by all the enthusiasts/collectors to whom Pete was a friend and hero.

Godspeed Pete... may you always be remembered as "The Fastest Man Alive".

Respectfully, Derek Horne

Hi Derek,
Thanks for this post Derek- I too remember this great pilot. In fact-I am the very proud owner of a lovely glossy coloured photo of Pete- in his grey flight suit-
standing next to the BELL X2 Aircraft AND SIGNED BY HIM. This was a present to me from
a flight training instructor IN FLORIDA-
for achieving my solo cross country, so many hours, and eventually receiving my
PRIVATE PILOTS LICENCE. Plus IMC for handling a single and a twin engine aircraft. I was also given a flight in a WACO PLANE- the stunt Type.
Regards from Brenda.

Amen Derek. I feel privileged to have corresponded with Pete and will treasure my signed copy of Fastest Man Alive.
May he rest in peace.

Paul
