Bush has asked the Apollo 11 astronauts and their families to join him in a private meeting in the White House Oval Office next week, administration officials told United Press International.Officials described the meeting -- on July 21, which is 35 years and one day after the first moon landing -- as a private affair and not an event. The three former astronauts -- Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins -- will attend along with their families. Other retired astronauts from the Apollo era also may attend the closed meeting. Sources close to some of the astronauts hinted that a public statement urging support for the president's new moon-Mars space plan might follow the meeting, but there has been no official confirmation of that prospect. On the evening of July 20, the actual 35th anniversary of the landing, NASA and aerospace industry will host a reception for the astronauts and their families at the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum in Washington. No public statement is expected at this event, which will also be closed to news media, UPI was told.

I have an invite to the event at NASM on Tuesday night, but I am still trying to figure out how to get there from Huntsville! NASA employees got the information on Tuesday making it difficult to make last minute (inexpensive) travel plans. I am still hoping to figure something out... |

Wonder if my Air and Space volunteers badge would do anything for me That would be the best perk I can think of for volunteering, I bet they could recruit a ton of CS members if that was the case! |

Like to know in the event you can not make the July 20th ceremony, would you be willing to sell them to me. I would also fund FEDx charnge, I live about 5 miles from the Air & Space in DC quote:

Not to dash anyone's hopes, but NASA employees' invites are non-transferrable. For a guest to attend, the NASA employee would need to be present and show his/her badge to enter. He/she must have also RSVP'd by today.I have a few friends going who have said they will take pictures during the evening. I'll post what they send for everyone to enjoy (also note the event will be broadcast on NASA TV). |
