The Helen Sharman lecture due this evening is not taking place. Apart from the dodgy trio of Ollie, Mark and myself I am not sure if anyone else was due to go but as many of the UK astronaut chasers are CS watchers this seemed to be the quickest way of getting the message around.

A big thank you to Ollie for his hard work in keeping on top of this event.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

Best wishes
Rob Wood

No it doesn't look like the event will be re-scheduled. Helen was due to attend a wedding nearby and one of the guests arranged for her to give a talk at the local flying club. The club Secretary posted it on their website only to hear at the last minute that she would not be giving the talk. I gather after a phonecall this morning that it was more the individuals fault, who said that she would give the talk than the Club Secretay's or Helen Sharman's doing. Seems that she remains a very private person. Took the day off yesterday as well to replace the dodgy alternater and front brakes on the car for the journey. I reckon we would have been pushing it back from Shobdon though Rob, forgot to mention just how dodgy it was when I offered you the lift. Ooops,
Oliver

Hey Ollie

Jill says that she didn't realise you were totally serious when you suggested that she and the kids come in case the car needed a push.

Rob, not being totally insensertive, I would have put my rear windscreen heater on, so that you could all have kept your hands warm when pushing. Just thought, as the meeting was a bit out in the wild, that it's best to have some company than break down on my own. Ollie

Thanks for the update on the lecture.

Pity because she is a good speaker.

Seen her twice - once with Tereshkova and once on her own at University of Keele.

Doesn't it say in her book what she did after the flight and initial speaking tour ?

I haven't got it too hand but I'm sure it says in it where she went to afterwards?

As a matter of interest I've got the Juno UK/USSR plaque in my collection.

As Shobdon is not far from me I'd do a space talk -with the Juno plaque and some other Soyuz/MIR kit for them to make up for it ?

I've done over 650 space talks over 35 years so getting good at it now :-))

Do it for travel expenses only on this occassion.

Oor a quickie aero trip round the field :-)

Phill,

Am I right in saying our first astronaut doesnt dwell on her flight and experience.??

I`m sure someone said she works for a large engineering group and wont be drawn to interviews ,and autographs ??

Regards,

Andrew

In some correspondence I had with her the other year, she told me that she still keeps up with the space program (such as reading "Spaceflight" magazine), but otherwise has chosen to move on from that short chapter of her life which was otherwise unrelated to her science career. She concentrates on her new family, new professional life and prefers not to do the lecture / book circuit anymore.

Having said that, she was extremely generous in helping me with some space history research I was doing, so is by no means a recluse who doesn't want to talk about space. She just does not want to be a public figure anymore, which I can completely respect. She certainly did a great deal (two books, a children's science TV show, numerous public appearances) for many years after her flight, as well as providing signed photographs to all who asked. She was a wonderful science ambassador for a long, long time.

Certainly when she came to Keele I don't think she signed - as far as I recall (Going back a few yaers here!)

There were a few photos of her available which she had signed earlier (I've got one somewhere)but I don't recall her 'staying around' to do the celebrity bit :-)

The film and slides she showed were excellent and her personal account made it even more rewarding.
