The movie "The Far Side of the Moon" will have its Montreal première thursday Oct. 9th, and I can't wait. I already mentionned some time ago in this Forum the play on which the movie was based, a fictionnal story about a space history afficionado by theater personality Robert Lepage.

In recent interviews, Lepage stated that he viewed the play as an opportunity to explore the theme of being second. With the space race as a backdrop to the script, with its firsts, its runnerups and its failures, he uses A. Leonov as a character, a cosmonaut who is the world's first spacewalker but who never made it to the moon.

In coming up with his concept, Lepage first had a lenghty conversation with Buzz Aldrin, to see if he could develop on Buzz' dissapointment of not having been first on the moon. "These guys are from the military, you know," he says, "they don't exhibit much of the drama you could expect considering what they've been through". Lepage then went on to use Leonov as the idol of the main character Philippe. The movie has been shown in Moscow last week to a select audience as part of a Canadian cultural delegation, with Leonov in attendance.
