Are you sure? I've read other reports that, as a military officer, Malenchenko would need the authoriziation of his superiors, which he had not requested, and that he had promised to his authorities not to proceed with the marriage. ------------------

This may be a matter of semantics. Russia chould choose not to acknowledge the ceremony on the 10th as a legal wedding. Instead, they wait until the second ceremony (which was always planned) to be held in Russia after he returns to Earth. All said and done, there would be little that Russia could do to stop Malenchenko. They could remove his flight privileges but after an extended stay on the ISS, there was little hope for another flight anyway. They could decommission him from the Air Force, but his marrying an American may signify his desire to live in the States from this point forward. Latest in Houston paper saying Russian space agency will not stop wedding: http://www.chron.com/cs/CDA/ssistory.mpl/front/2028138 This part has me thinking Yuri's not coming out too well in the long run on this:
"He wants it, and he will have it -- that's his problem," Gorbunov told The Associated Press. The marriage in absentia was designed for military personnel to be able to marry his (or her) Texas sweetie when on duty on the other side of the earth. Also gets used by prisoners that can't get out of jail to get hitched. Hey, by golly, if it's legal in Texas, that's all that matters! ;-)
