This night an Unmanned Soyuz Expendable Launch Vehicle exploded about half a minute in flight ... It carried a Foton scientific experiments probe among which some Belgian equipment ...
In 14 days time the Soyuz Launch Vehicle has to carry the Soyuz TMA-01 crew to ISS in order to replace the previous Soyuz Capsule acting as a lifeboat for the 3-man resident crew onboard ISS ...
Might this launch failure affect launches or will the Russians go for launch and replace the Soyuz as planned ...
I believe in the latter option ...

Looks like the launch of the new Soyuz TMA-01 vehicle is postponed to 30 October or 01 November ... The 3-man crew awaits further news ( ZALYOTIN + LONCHAKOV + DE WINNE ) ...
Does anybody ( in Europe ) know if any of the ( Belgian ) TV-channels willbroadcast the launch LIVE on TV ?
Best regards from BELGIQUE !

As they have announced 30th Oct as launch date, I assume they have a good knowledge of what caused the Plesetsk accident?

Have the Russians published any details yet of the accident cause?

From the ISS daily Status, 23-10-2002:

Launch preparations at Baikonur continue for Soyuz launch at 10:11pm EST on 10/29 (next Tuesday). The ISS currently remains XPOP (sun-oriented) flight attitude. This will be interrupted on 10/31 (10:19pm EST) for two hours when station attitude will be switched to inertial mode for the Soyuz 5S docking at 11:56pm (briefly in free drift).

Preliminary investigation of the Soyuz-U launch mishap at Plesetsk on 10/15 indicates that the failure was caused by loss of thrust in one of the booster's side blocks due to off-nominal operation of the hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) feed to the engine's turbopump unit.

Belgium's second spacefarer Air Force Colonel Ir Frank De Winne returned to Belgium yesterday 24 November 2002 ... Lots of space-fans welcomed him at the National airport Brussels-Zaventem ...
