Toward the end of the Lunar Orbiter 5 mission - in orbit around the Moon in 1968 - ground crews orientated the solar panels such that sunlight would be reflected from them. On the ground a large telescope belonging to University of Arizona (? - maybe 60-62 inch?) photographed the spacecraft as it emerged from behind the limb. They said the spacecraft showed up as a 12th magnitude star on the photos.Does anyone have an image of this photo or know where one may be referenced - preferably over the www? As ana side - was any attempt ever made by anyone (and was succesful!) at imaging Apollo in orbit. Obviously a much much darker subject but, I do wonder? I know several tranlunar flight imges were made from the ground (out to about 150000 miles) - mainly of water dumps. |
