Previous "Autographicas" in Northampton, England, have given space enthusiasts the opportunity to meet (among others) Alan Bean, Edgar Mitchell, Richard Gordon, Walt Cunningham, Alexei Leonov and Vladimir Shatalov.I have just received an intriguing circular from the organizers about "Autographica 2003." They state: "We plan to have at least one Apollo astronaut and we are working on 2 cosmonauts. In addition...we are trying to get someone who would certainly blow the roof off (!) for all you space collectors. If you book early enough for the dinner you may get the chance to sit next to this space legend.." Would anyone care to speculate on what makes a "space legend"? Who might they be talking about? I rule out Neil Armstrong - he wouldn't attend an autograph show. With all due respect to the many brave Russian cosmonauts, their only "space legend" who could "blow the roof off" by his attendance sadly died in an air crash in 1968. Of those who might be inclined to attend, I can only think of two unarguable "space legends": Buzz Aldrin and Jim Lovell. Personally, I would also name Gene Cernan, David Scott (who lives in London!) and John Glenn. Have I missed any names who could unarguably be described as "space legends" whose attendance would "blow the roof off"? And am I being overly legalistic to think that the wording of the circular hints that this "space legend" was not an Apollo astronaut? |

Someone able "to blow the roof off" should be FEMALE I guess ...
What about Valentina TERESHKOVA or Svetlana SAVITSKAYA ... who both are difficult to get an autograph from ...
Others coming to mind ( in the category = Females difficult to find autograph ) are Kay HIRE and Sally RIDE ...

John Young would certainly fit the bill of "space legend". Didn't someone somewhere (I think it was Charlie Duke) once say they expected John to be a little more liberal with his signing once he retired from NASA? He must be getting pretty close to hanging up his wings.....Regards, Rick. |

I putting my money on Buzz Aldrin, Gene Cernan. I know Dave Scott lives in the UK, but I understand he doesnt like to be photographed etc when signing. Hence his signing occaisionally at Novaspace. You can only speculate!!
Putting a book with odds together could be interesting !!!Andrew

Interesting speculation...I think Valentina Tereshkova would be in the "space legends" category, but is she not a serving politician, and therefore unlikely to attend an event like Autographica? I didn't consider John Young, who is most certainly a space legend, because I assume he will still be a NASA employee next May, and would not attend such an event. No disrespect to the other names mentioned, but with the possible exception of Wally Schirra, I don't think they quite make "legend" status. Personally, I hope it's Jim Lovell or Gene Cernan. |
