Just found an ad in the New York Times that I thought the members might find interesting.
On Feb. 4, at 3-6 pm there is a screening of the film "For all Mankind", followed by a panel discussion with Al Reinert (director and screenwriter on "apollo 13") and Gene Kranz. Info at 1-888-NYT-1870 (tickets listed at 25.00). Sounds interesting. Clifford |

ben,Ad was in NY Times, Science section, page F4, on Tuesday, January 16. It is part of the NY Times series called "TimesTalks". Forgot to add that it takes place at the Directors Guild of America Theatre, 110 West 57th St. (between 6th and 7th). Hope to see you there, but am not sure I can make the time. Life with a three year old, and I love it. |

Well, just got back.Of all you New Yorkers out there, I only ran into Robert; nice seeing you/him again.It was nice to see the film on the big screen, as compared to my computer. The discussion afterwards was interesting, though not exciting. I got my autograph...but along with a few others, it was a rushed job, nothing special. Oh well....The 'reception' to meet the panel was more of a Gene Kranz book signing, with Reinart being the one to chat with; although I did not. Better luck with the next encounter. -Ben |

Last week I got back my photos I'd sent to Gene Kranz to S&I. As usual I sent a small check to cover any costs he might incur. I always do this out of courtesy. But like when I sent a request to him several months ago he sent the check back uncashed.A world class guy! ------------------

I, too am just back. Sorry you were disappointed Ben. I found it interesting, although geared more to where we should be going. I must add that Gene Krantz was a dream. His plane was late, I'm sure he was tired and hungry comming straight from the airport, but he was funny and patient. He answered all questions honestly. At 5.45 pm he than went directly down to the reception area without a break and signed. Even though they were selling his book there, he signed anything put in front of him. A woman before me had three copies of his book. He signed all three. and another guy had an unrelated book and cover. he signed. He signed my copy of Lost Moon with a smile and answered a question I did'nt get to ask upstairs. One of the most classy guys I have ever met. A real role model. IF I am lucky enough to have Mr. Kranz read this , my personal thanks to you. You are a gentleman and a scholar. Clifford |

Glad to hear the event went well. Unfortunately, I missed the event and had to eat the ticket as the flu hit my spouse and both kids on Friday and continues.
I suspect Wayne has answered my question, but will Mr. Kranz require any fee if I send my book directly to him with all return postage and handling covered? |

Kranz will not take a fee of any kind. He is one of the best. |

FYIYou might want to visit Mr. Kranz's website (http://www.genekranz.com/) - In the "debriefing" section (actually faq) he requests that books not be sent to his home for signing, but rather a specific bookstore near his home be contacted. I must add one comment whihc I had been thinking about after I got home.This was advertised as a movie screening and "meet the panel" event. Yet it somehow turned into a book signing, sponsered by borders....ie, they were selling the bbook there. I have a feeling it was planned beforehand. Personall, I found that a bit 'rude', if I should use that word. And of course, one person after another bought it. Anyone else think that? -Ben |

I don't know Ben. Given that Reinhart was available for "meet and greet" encounters and Kranz wasn't instituing a book-only policy (I had a brief handshake with him towards the end of the event), I don't think there was anything wrong with having the book and DVD available for purchase. Consider it from the perspective of someone who didn't even know Kranz had a book -- it was an opportunity to have Kranz autograph something much more personal than a napkin or program. Anyway, it was my understanding that Kranz came in specifically for this event. The book sale probably helped offset his expenses. |

Ben, I have to take issue with you. A good point from Robert, looking at it from the point of view of someone new to his book. I point out the girl, maybe 10, who asked two questions (did you want to fly too ?). later downstairs I saw her in line behind me , her father had just bought the book and she had stars in her eyes as she waited for Gene to sign. As a second point try to look at it from Kranz's point. He flew in from the other coast just for this. The 100 or so people there at 25 each can't add up to much to be split so many ways. Surely you don't begrudge him selling his own book, as long as he signs other things too.(and for free too!) I went with a copy of lost moon, and a question and came back with an answer and a signature. I can't ask for any more than that. clifford |

You are absolutely right Cliff. Ill retract what I said. I think I am reacting to Gene's signing my photo. He wasnt too friendly, and I dont know why.BTW, not that its important, but that girl had the book when she came, knowing who Gene was. Its always nice to see young space fans...[younger than me I mean!]. -Ben
