I've been participating as a member of CollectSpace for about 3 years now, and have expanded my knowledge of our hobby exponentially. There are areas that I see others talk about that I have interest in, but really don't have much of a clue about. I'm sure that there are others out there like me. It would be a great resource to have a "101" section on CollectSpace where you can get some of the basics. For example, what at the basics about NASA lithos? I've heard a lot about funny little numbers on the back and whether they are red, black, purple or some other color from the rainbow, but I really don't have a clue - call the reference page "Lithos 101." Another example might be about patches. I've heard a lot about Lion Brother's patches - sounds intersting given I got a ton of patches from when I was a kid. I couldn't tell you how to identify one - perhaps I could look it up in "Patches 101." I realize I could drop a post on the subject and let everyone chime in, but I have to out myself and admit I don't have a clue. Easier to drop by "101" and read a bit from an expert prior to putting myself out there. :-) Just a thought. Thanks for considering the suggestion. Rob |

That was the initial idea behind collectSPACE's Resources, which has introductory guides to philatelic covers, patches and autopens, among other topics. At the same time, we didn't want to knowingly duplicate the great efforts of others: for example, while the article about patches offers the basics, it promotes established guides such as the author's (Gene Dorr's) own website as well as other great resources like spacepatches.info. When collectSPACE first came online, it was meant to complement Relics of the Space Race, which was the must-have collecting 101 guide. Now that all three of its editions are out of print, it may be time to pick up where it left off. Of course, it all comes down to those with the knowledge having the time and wherewithal to share it. We have always had an open manuscript policy, which means anyone can write a guide and submit it for publication on collectSPACE. We will review it and if accepted, will help edit it for presentation on the site. You needn't be a great writer to participate; you only need to have the desire to share your knowledge with others. | |
