Space Cover of the Week, Week 475 (July 22, 2018)

Space Cover #475: Pioneer-Venus 40th Anniversary

2018 marks the 40th anniversary of the Pioneer-Venus missions. In previous Space Cover of the Week posts nos. 94 and 179, I showed launch and mission covers that were autographed by project officials and scientists. In this installment, I am going to show prelaunch testing covers of the orbiter and multiprobes.

The covers shown were autographed by Pioneer-Venus Program Manager at Hughes Aircraft, Steve Dorfman and cancelled on dates of various tests. Space cover dealer, Stan Henderson arranged with the scientists to service 100 to 150 covers for signifigant events.

Wonderful material. For those unfamiliar with unmanned spacecraft preparation there has always been a tension between sterilization by heat to ensure we don't introduce organisms into alien worlds and the decrease in reliability of electrical components exposed to baking.

I often watch the Science Channel, Discovery Channel and the History Channel, particularly "Ancient Aliens." They frequently mention the theory that meteors could have carried viruses that caused plagues on Earth in the past. That is why it is so important to sterilize our spacecraft that are visiting other planets and moons of other planets.
