The May-June Astrophile has now been printed and is being distributed. One article, by yours truly, is entitled "Was this Noa Cover Backdated?". No, it's not quite the one you are probably thinking of. See the Space Unit website for the cover and Astrophile for the answer. The article also asks questions about another USS Noa cover. But you need to read the article for that one. Any thoughts on this or the May-June Astrophile in general?

The May/June issue arrived today and it is well worth the wait. I think it is an excellent reference for all the recovery covers for the M-G-A flights. That is a lot of information and pictures to pack into one issue of Astrophile. Well done!

I've got to echo SRB's post above - definitely well worth the wait!

Ross, your research on backdated Noas was excellent, albeit personally painful (I had sold a Noa with a PM in the postmark to get one with the spiffier cachet and alas, no PM...nerts!). And the Dan Kovalchik articles on tracking ships were so good they got me interested in an area that I had previously ignored.

Great issue and kudos to Jim Roth for taking the Astrophile to a whole new level.

What a great issue. I can not believe Micropooz (aka "D man") is just picking up tracking.

Dennis, I have a number of the MSTS extra tracking covers. Will show you when we meet with the DC autograph club.

All the new issues this year are fantastic, and in color! Who cares what the date is on issue, keep them coming! When is the next ATA space unit meeting?

Thanks for bringing up the next Space Unit meeting Woody!

We are working on having a national meeting at the Americover show in Falls Church, Va (DC area) during the weekend of Aug 22 - 24. Haven't worked any more details, but will post them as they gel.

Incredibly good research, writing and color illustrations. This issue will be a resource for collectors of recovery covers for many years. A+.

Just received mine today (Australia). Great issue with a huge number of illustrations. Really takes full advantage of being in colour. Congratulations to Jim for one of the best issues yet. My only small quibble is with the list of Project Mercury Recovery Ships. There are a number of errors (mind you, these same errors occur in most, if not all, such lists including NASA's and the US Navy's lists!), including perpetuating the myth that the USS Antietam was in the Pacific for MA-6. The most up to date list for the Manned Missions can be found on the Space Unit website.

Still, a great job.

The next issue (July/August) is now with the printer and should be mailed any day. The Sep-Oct issue is almost complete and proofs will be going to the reviewers next week so hopefully to the printer the following week. The Nov-Dec issue will be started shortly.

P.S. I believe the editor has been sick and that explains at least some of the delay.

An envelope to mail the dues is included with the Astrophile mailing when the dues are to be sent.

This upcoming issue contains photos of space covers you have probably NEVER seen before ...... as Ross said it will be in the mail soon.

The Space Unit's Nov/Dec 2007 Astrophile has been received. One article of note is the Astrophile's first newsletter published in November 1957. We have come a long way in 50 years. The offer still stands if anybody wants to see a copy of the Astrophile send me an email with your mailing address and I'll send you a copy as well as a membership application.

Another great issues! Of note are the Space Unit postcards noted on pages 253-257. I have 11 of them.

Note: found this error on page 253: SP-2 and SP-3 pictures are reversed (wrong pictures shown for Galileo and Tsiolokovsky) I have both of these cards!

The January/February 2008 issue of Astrophile arrived in Australia today. Another great issue with lots of photos of stamps and covers. Includes several articles on Science Fiction in Stamps, 50th Anniversary of Explorer 1, 5th Anniversary of STS-107 (a multitude of covers and stamps in this one) and much more.

Well Done to Jim Roth, the Editor.

The March/April issue is the latest issue of Astrophile. Due to problems that have be documented in recent issues of Astrophile, including sickness, it is several issues behind schedule. The front covers and contents pages of all issues of Astrophile since July/August 2005 are shown of the SU web site. Choose 'Astrophile - Latest' from the menu on the main page and then 'Previous Astrophiles'. That will show you every issue since 2005.

I just go the May/June Astrophile. Also, got the dues notice and a brown form for the Space unit Ballot. It says on page 102 to vote by JAN 30, 2009.

Hard to vote by this date when I received the ballot on FEB 09 2009. If I send the ballot, will it count?

Received my Astrophile, which is loaded with great color illustrations and good content.

I wonder if it is more realistic to make the Astrophile a quarterly publication.

It is larger and more like a magazine than the newsletters we published years ago. With the internet, the Astrophile is less a source of immediate news than a reference source. The editors do it as a labor of love because they receive just a token stipend and each issue takes many hours to prepare.

What do you think?

Just checked the Space Unit web site and the election closing date is March 15, 2009.

That gives everyone time to get the lastest Astrophile (worth the wait) and the ballot plus dues mailed back in time!

Received the July/Aug 2008 Astrophile today by first class mail.

The issue compiles all the unmanned Mars missions with descriptions of the flights and extensive color illustrations of covers relating to each.

Another fine effort.

Astrophile issue 305 arrived in Australia today. Another excellent issue with a host of covers from all the main Mars' missions. The wide variety of covers that are illustrated came from quite a wide range of Space Unit members and make for a very interesting issue. The issue also contains a number of other articles and regular columns.

I received my copy of the latest issue of the Astrophile "U.S. Planetary Exploration: Part 3 Jupiter & Beyond."

The 48 page issue includes covers and details about the Pioneer, Voyager, Galileo, and Cassini misions. It is profusely illustrated in color and contains execellent content. I found the listing of Saturn's moons very useful.

The issue is listed as "September/October, 2008"-- more than a year behind schedule. The Astrophile is supposed to be bi-monthly but more recently has been on what appears to be a quarterly basis. Certainly the Astrophile contains more content with 48 pages an issue than in the past. However, if the editors cannot put out 6 issues a year, they should IMO acknowlege that reality and re-align the date and year on the headings of future issues. People in the future who read this Sept/Oct 2008 issue will wonder why there is news about a September 2009 meeting in Baltimore.

Years ago-- before the internet-- the Astrophile was a primary news source for space stamp and cover collectors. It has become less of a newsletter and more of a reference volume. The current editors have made it visually attractive with modern graphics and color illustrations of covers and stamps.

I have no problem if it is issued quarterly. but this should be done explicitly. Will the November/December 2008 issue come out in 2009 or 2010?

I just received my copy of Astrophile for May-Aug 2009. Yes, that's not a typo, it is for 2009. While a year "late", what an issue. There is a fine article by Steve Durst on postal covers relating to the Apollo 11 mission. Moreover there are fabulous articles by Chris and Paul Calle showing their stamp art, including many preliminary designs for their work. The Calle articles are almost 40 pages long, all in color. It was easily worth waiting a year to get this issue commemorating the 40th anniversary of Apollo 11. Congratulations to all involved in producing this great journal.

THIS issue of the Astrophile, on Apollo 11 just arrived as reported above. It is ABSOLUTELY spectacular and the only thing I see "wrong", is that MY name is NOT in it anywhere! HA HA HA!

This is a true publication that ANY space buff is going to want on their shelf, even if they have never touched a cover! WOW!

I am absolutely dumbfounded that such a grand issue could come off the presses these days... the color is outstanding and the paper quality will outlive most of us!

Thanks to ALL who had a hand in this! I just recently sent a renewal in, so I was lucky I did not wait. THANKS, SPACE UNIT!

I received issue 310 of the Astrophile today. It is consists of a masterful review of Project Gemini. There are literally hundreds of color photos and color illustrations of covers and stamps from the Project Gemini era (1962-1966).Most of the articles are written by noted cover collector and Space Unit VP Steve Durst.

The 96-page issue ls marked "September-December 2009" (Vol. 54, No. 3). Astrophile Editor Jim Roth is trying to catch up by putting out double issues.

This issue is a great reference work for the Gemini program, which paved our way to the moon. Well done.
