I found this envelope in a stamp collection I purchased at an estate auction and I am hoping someone can share some information concerning what it was commemorating. The "stamp" is a hologram placed from the inside of the envelope. |

The US Postal Service issued several types of these space station holograms, at different values. 25c, 29c, 32c, I think I remember. For all of them, there were First Day of Issue cancellations, pictorial ones like the one you show, but also the standard ones with just the mention of "First Day of Issue". |

As far as I am aware those were cancelled on the 1st day of issue (3rd Dec 89) with a pictorial cancellation at World Stamp Expo Station. |

Thanks guys. Why would it be cancelled without the commemoration as shown to the left on the Expo event? So it has nothing to do with the Smithsonian? |

I'm not sure of the reason, but I have seen lots available for sale with the 25c Space Station uncacheted cachet. There are also thousands around without first day of issue cancellations (stamp only). |

If I recall correctly, the World Stamp Expo in 1989 was held at the DC Convention Center. Both Buzz Aldrin and Gherman Titov were there. |
