I now have several Recovery Ship covers with a similar multicolour cachet. Does anyone know who produced these rather attractive covers? Maybe there is a clue in the KK., which is part of the design. |

These cachets were most likely produced by Frederick L. Karcher of Karcher Kover. His cachets have the identifying mark of KK. (His first cachet for US first Day covers was for the Project Mercury stamp #1193 of Feb. 20, 1962.) |

I think this MA-9 cover is a bit early for Frederick L. Karcher's cachets. He used FLK, FaLKon and Old Ironsides Chapter in his cachets. I have started to compile all known covers from Karcher — currently more then 800 different covers — and none of them has KK in the cachet. While this is similar to Karchers work, am thinking KK could be Kover King. All images of Karcher covers welcomed, the finished work will become a Daya Sheet of the Universal Ship Cancellation Society. |

Welcome to collectSPACE Rich!If I am not mistaken, Mr. Hoffner is a very respected naval cachet maker. And that includes some great space covers - the USS Warrington cover/cachet for the Mercury-Redstone 2 ("Ham") flight comes to mind. |

This is in reference to my remark above for the May 24, 2009 entry. The first day cover for the Project Mercury stamp #1193 of Feb. 20, 1962 that has the KK markings is shown in the "First Day Cover Photo Encyclopedia of First Cachets Revealed 1923-2005" issued by Richard A. Monty and 3 others. This catalog is an AFDCS edition. The catalog's cross reference index lists KK as "Karcher Kover". This cover in the catalog is autographed by Frederick Karcher. Why else would he sign this cover if it was not his own cachet? Its understandable that a celebrity will autograph just about anything, but its unlikely that Mr. Karcher, a cachetmaker, would sign something that was not his own creation.Perhaps at a later date Mr. Karcher decided to change his identification markings on his cachets from KK to something else. I would suggest contacting the AFDCS (American First Day Cover Society), to see if they have any notes or articles from or about Frederick Karcher for additional information on his cachets. |

Thanks to Rich and Joe for their contributions. I've taken up Joe's suggestion and emailed the AFDCS. I'll post any reply I receive. |

I haven't received a reply from the AFDCS but I've just purchased a cover for the 1st anniversary of MA-6 (postmark USS Noa) with the typical KK cachet. On the back is a text cachet 'Frederick L. Karcher Jr.'. This leaves no doubt as to who the cachet creator is. |

I believe Karcher was expelled from USCS for fake covers and cancels. The USCS did a series of articles in their journal "Log" about Naval Cover Fakes, Forgeries and Frauds which ran in the Log from February 2008 to February 2009. The June 2008 installment dealt with Karcher and his fake Vietnam era covers. As most space cover collectors know, Naval covers were faked by Charles Riser. |
