Does anyone know if launch day covers exist for the Indian Mangalyaan mission? I haven't been able to find any.

As long I know (and I am quite sure because I am collecting Mars covers for +20 years as principal goal) NOT covers exist postmarked Nov, 5th 2013 from Shriharikota, India commemorating launch date for Mangalyaan or Mars Orbiter Mission (MOM).

This is not an especific trouble for this Mars mission but for all Indian space missions.

It is hard to belive that a coutry like India with a population of over 1,2M people have not any dealer or any astrophilatelist, or simply any collector for space thematic, interested in getting covers postmarked from nearest launch site on launch date.

I even tried to get these kind of covers with no luck so far, as some other European astrophilatelists. Maybe in the future someone...

However, and as not appropiate covers from India exist, it is still possible to mark this event with other covers. See some examples:

Both covers were serviced by Goddard Space Flight Center.

This cover has only partial relation with MOM launch, coincidence by date, but, as previously discussed, not many possibilites exist. So, it is your choice.

I was lucky to get this cover postmarked Robledo de Chavela (Madrid) where Madrid Deep Space Complex Communication (MDSCC) is located and more lucky too to receive the official rubber stamp cachet in blue from this NASA-INTA tracking station which belongs to Deep Space Network (DSN).

Finally, I have only seen two Indian covers referred to MOM, and both issued for philatelic exhibitions:

  • Ananthapuripex 2014. Cover postmarked 14 Nov 2014 from Thiruvananthapuram.
  • Karnapex 2015. Cover postmarked 16 Jan 2015 from Bangalore.

All times are CT (US)
