Space Cover of the Week, Week 193 December 23, 2012

Space Cover 192, A Skylab 4 Holiday to Remember

What present would you want for a holiday? Well, if I was in space it would be a record setting spacewalk... and that is exactly what the Skylab 4 astronauts received for their holiday in 1973!

The second spacewalk of the Skylab 4 mission would take place on December 25, 1973 with a then record setting length of seven hours. Jerry Carr and Bill Pogue used two special cameras – an extreme ultraviolet electronographic camera and a coronograph contamination camera – to photograph Comet Kohoutek as it approached its perihelion on December 28. Comet Kohoutek was observed first by Skylab 4 and then by Soyuz 13 thus becoming the first comet to be observed by a manned spacecraft.

In addition to their photography of the comet Carr and Gibson also replaced film on the Skylab solar observatory.

Shown above in the scan are three covers for this spacewalk. The top cover is from the Space City Cover Society while the middle cover is a Space Voyage cover. Both of these are cancelled from Houston on December 25. The bottom cover is a Philgraph cover and is cancelled at Cape Canaveral with a December 25th cancel.

As Steve said... Happy Holidays from all of us Space Cover of the Week writers to you and your families!

As a big Skylab enthusiast and cover collector (with SL-4 being my favorite mission for personal reasons), I am always glad to see a Skylab selection of different covers featured in this report.

While I do love most of the Philgraph cachet cover productions throughout the Apollo era, the last one depicted here is not one of my favorites.

It illustrates an photo-image of Ed White, America's first spacewalker in 1965, in place of SL-4 crewmen Jerry Carr and Bill Pogue that performed a twin camera attachment EVA for Comet Kohoutek on Christmas Day 1973.

Ken - Other than they are Philgraph Cachets I don't know anything about them. Do you know who produced them? How many were produced for each event? What missions were they done for? Why were some produced without the "Philgraph cachet" with the cachet?

In thinking back so many years, the "Philgraf" cachet productions were a part of the NY company responsible for the Colorano silk cachets from the later Apollo, all Skylab, and ASTP events--and not to mention--countless other milestone aerospace activities.

Most of the printed Philgraf cachets were identical to the silk cachet productions, with the same events commemorated, and used postal site cancellations.

The company was originally owned by Paul Schmid and located in Huntington, NY, until there was a recent change in ownership and location.

My firm is still servicing the Colorano silk cachets with CC/KSC postal cancellations for major space events here on the Florida Space Coast.
