I am writing the U.S. Postal Service to urge that commemorative stamps be issued to honor Neil Arnstrong and Sally Ride, both of whom passed away recently. Certainly the first human on the Moon and the first American woman in orbit deserve such an honor.

I also suggest a Space Pioneers series honoring key astronauts who died earlier, such as Wally Schirra, Ed White and Pete Conrad.

If you agree, write to:

Citizens' Stamp Advisory Committee
c/o Stamp Development
U.S. Postal Service
475 L’Enfant Plaza SW, Room 3300
Washington, DC 20260

(Note; Ask them to waive the current rule requiring that individuals be dead for five years before a stamp can be issued.)

From a U.S. Postal Service Sept. 26, 2011 release:
The Postal Service is dropping a rule that currently requires an individual to have been deceased at least five years before being honored on a stamp. Under the new guidelines, living or recently deceased individuals will be eligible for commemoration on postage stamps.
The USPS has also changed the way they issue new stamps. They are no longer releasing a year-long program but rather announcing new stamps 90 days before their issue, when pre-orders will begin.

All they need to do now is to fix their web site for overseas orders...

I received a letter today from Connie Totten-Oldham, Manager, Stamp Development of the U.S. Postal Service. She writes in part:
Thank you for your letter to the Citizens' Stamp Advisory Committee expressing support for the issuance of commemorative stamps to honor Neil Armstrong and Sally Ride.

I am pleased to inform you both names will be submitted for review and consideration before the Advisory Committee. The Committee is responsible for reviewing stamp proposals and making recommendations to the Postmaster General.

I think it's pretty safe to assume that Armstrong will eventually receive a stamp. The only thing that might delay it somewhat is the fact that Alan Shepard recently got a stamp of his own...and they may not wish to issue to astronaut stamps so close together.

I do not think that the release of the Alan Shepard stamp is delaying the release of the Neil Armstrong stamp. Armstrong died very recently. It takes time to prepare a stamp for distribution.

Under the new USPS guidelines, the USPS may announce the issuance of a stamp up to 90 days before its release.

I like the idea of a Neil Armstrong/Sally Ride double issue. The stamps must be designed, modeled, engraved, printed and distributed.

I look forward to a Neil Armstrong stamp in 2013. Stock up on Apollo XI (C76) stamps for combination covers. Many countries have issued stamps for Neil Armstrong. They would also make great combination FDCs.

All times are CT (US)
