How many Apollo 10 hand cancels (HC) are there?

Here is a seldom seen hand cancel from the Apollo 10 prime recovery ship.

Eddie Birzub has one (and sold another several years ago). His were from the collection of Richard Learn. Do we know of others?

The one in my collection came from Mr. Durst so does that change the count?

There is a second question with regard to these covers. The one shown is a very nice clean example. However, the one on my website and at least one other appear to have been applied because of poor or partial machine cancels. So the other question is; How many of these are clean hand cancels with no indication of a machine cancel?

Ross, I own the Princeton HC listed on your website and you certainly can see a partial MC underneath the HC. However, the other one I had and sold several years ago was as pristine a cancel as David shows here. There was no hint of a machine cancel. It too was a #10 envelope.

David's cover is further interesting as it has a black cachet where all of the others I have seen have the pink cachet.

Eddie, good spotting. I hadn't even noticed the colour of the cachet. Looks like a new note for my site. Must have been a really special job. Pity we don't know who it was given to. And yes, the cover on my site is indeed yours as noted.

Think Ross may be on to something as it is a "special" cover because it has (1) the very rare HC and (2) the only known black cachet.

If it had been done at the same time as all the others one would suppose it would have received the pinkish RSC even with a special request for a hand cancel. So perhaps a backdated request for a cancel and the black ink pad just happened to be the one available for use for the cachet?

As Ross states its too bad we don't know who originated the cover to know the details.

You're right, I didn't think of it but it could be PREdated I guess...

Can't really imagine one of the Navy postal clerks - who really don't know a lot, if anything, about philately - going out of their way to specifically cancel one cover with a black cachet while they are doing hundreds of others with pink ones...

All times are CT (US)
