I was looking at the 'space covers' category on eBay and saw two covers flown on rockets that have cachets that look like they were designed by Carl Swanson of Spacecraft/Swanson cachets. I can't find a company name on one of them, but the other one looks like it has 'Swanson' printed in the cachet.

I'm certainly no expert on Swanson cachets, but I don't recall every seeing or hearing about Swanson cachets being used on these types of covers.

Is this something not known before, or has the use of Swanson cachets on 'rocket mail' covers been previously documented?

Yes, these 2 rocket covers were produced by Joe Fitzpatrick and Carl Swanson of Space Craft Covers. There is a write-up about them in Chuck Vukotich's Space Craft Covers book. Funny story about the ones I have in my collection. Being somewhat of an expert on SCC I bought the top one from a dealer simply because it looked like Carl Swanson's artwork. Later when Chuck published his book I was happy to find that it was indeed Carl Swanson's work. As for the bottom one, when my dad and I went to visit Joe Fitzpatrick's widow in 1988 to purchase what covers she had left, I happened to knock the lid off of a box that was under the bed and that cover fell out! So far its the only one that I have seen.

I've only seen one of each as well - back when I bought Jane Beville's SCC collection 5 years ago. These shouldn't be that rare - Vukotich lists 340 made for the 10/31/64, and 500 for the 5/22/65.

All times are CT (US)
