Smithsonian National Postal Museum announcement
Vote For A Stamp To Represent The United States!

The Smithsonian National Postal Museum is conducting a poll to see which U.S. postage stamp should represent the United States in the new International Collections Exhibit of the new William H. Gross Stamp Gallery, scheduled to open in the fall of 2012.

The International Collections Exhibit will explore geography, ancestry, history, culture, the environment, and other global topics and themes through interpretive displays of stamps and other philatelic items from around the world. The collections will include a permanent exhibit of important international stamps as well as rotating exhibits of other key materials.

The exhibit will feature original objects and interactive displays -- including a map of the world with sliding windows that reveal stamps and other objects associated with each region.

Additionally, the gallery will feature one stamp from each country, including the United States. The Philatelic Department of the museum has chosen seven stamps that it believes would best represent our great nation.

Cheryl Ganz, Chief Curator of Philately, would like visitors, stamp collectors, fans, and members of the public to Cast Your Vote to help decide which of the seven stamps will be chosen to represent the United States.

Voting will be open until midnight, January 20, 2011. The stamp receiving the most votes will win!

Choose the moon: Vote for artist Chris Calle's $2.40 Priority Mail stamp honoring the 20th anniversary of the Apollo moon landing as issued on July 20, 1989.
The stamp, which features two astronauts planting the Stars and Stripes on the lunar surface, enjoyed a legacy of its own. The stamp's designer, Christopher Calle, of Ridgefield, CT, was the son of Paul Calle, the veteran illustrator who produced the first Moon Landing tribute, a 10-cent airmail stamp issued September 9, 1969.

It became one of the most popular and recognizable postage stamps ever issued.

Choosing the moon will not only honor a great stamp and stamp artist, but also recognize the moon landing as the crowning achievement of the United States.

As of 9:00 a.m. CST Dec. 15, Chris' Moon Landing stamp is now solidly in the lead with 29% of the vote (437 out of 1,486 votes).

The next runner up -- Flag and Fireworks, which was in the lead yesterday morning -- has 19% of the votes (286).

Still, every vote counts so if you haven't cast yours yet, please do!

It doesn't say that foreigners can't vote so I added mine. I do wonder though why they chose to include the 20th anniversary stamp rather than the 1969 stamp, somehow I would think that that one would've been even more popular and widely used given the national pride at that time.

I voted for The Moon Stamp. My vote made it 621. Although there is a way to click on the vote page to include it on your FaceBook page, I decided to rewrite it and display the $2.90 Moon Landing stamp. By the time I finished and checked it out the voting for #5 had increased to 634 (32%).

As a variance on Joe's Facebook idea I created an email based on Robert's initial post above, included the link to vote and sent it to five folks I know. I asked them to vote and forward to everyone they know. These people are always sending me forwarded jokes, pics, etc. Two of them have about 500 contacts each. Might start a chain reaction if all who read this thread do the same.

Definately an influence at work. Today I observed the voting between 11:30am CST and 1:30pm CST 60 votes were cast. Of those 60 votes Chris received 53 within that time frame. Is the vote for Chris showing signs of going viral?

I did a Facebook promo first thing, and sent it out to about 500 friends. Other people did, too, so between Facebook and Twittter, that's a LOT of people. 1200 now.

Chris can paint better than Bristol can dance!

I just voted - 1201 at 40%. The moon walkers are smoking the competition!

Since the moon landings are the pinnacle of human exploration it seems like a no brainer when compared to the other designs... I think Bart Sibrel is running the campaign for the anti-moon stamp votes!

What is a good way to obtain one of these beautiful stamps? Are there still unused ones available now and again and what kind of price do they sell for?

A mint sheet of this $2.40 Apollo stamp (face value $48) is now being auctioned on Ebay (310282362336). The highest bid so far is only $15.50 with 9 days remaining.

I often buy sheets of stamps from this seller below face value. Sometimes I am lucky and I get the highest bid on space stamps either below face value or slightly over face value. There is no shipping charge and the stamps are shipped flat and very fast.

I just voted... #5 - Moon Landing 59% (3514). How could I NOT vote for that issue out of true love, respect and thanks for the Calle's.

I too was fortunate to meet Paul at the first day ceremony of his Carousel Animals at Cedar Point... and Chris at one of the big shows in Chicago area where he greeted me like an old friend.
