Any news updates on any stamps or other philatelic commemorations of Yuri Gagarin's historic flight 50 years ago?

Our society in the UK will more than likely be producing some limited-edition commemorative covers. We also issued some for the 40th anniversary of Alexei Leonov's EVA.

Midlands Spaceflight Society. Our President is Dave Shayler and our Honorary Member is Helen Sharman. There is a dedicated thread in the Free Space section.

So like many of you I "plan" on producing "something" in the way of a cachet for the Shepard (US) stamp and the UN spaceflight anniversary stamp(s).

I would be interested in putting together a list NOW of who will be making what (covers, cards., etc) and who will be willing to trade some of my unserviced cachets for your unserviced cachets.

There was a collector who set up a "group"/publication for "Apollo 11 at 25" covers (as I call them) and I certainly am NOT planning on trying to duplicate that effort... I just am looking for cachet trades for next year... I quite likely will just do a printed cachet (one color) but that is always up in the air, because I have to "train" a new local printer all about cachets since the ones I have used in the past have all moved on/gone out of business. I don't expect to do more than one design, but a 5x7 card is not out of the question either since they allow so much more space to work with rather than just a 6 3/4" cover.

Reply via e-mail is probably better but I am open: use eugenebella@yahoo.com for this effort, please.

I expect that the nearest we, in Britain, will get to commemorating human spaceflight is a stamp issue, in January, commemorating Gerry Anderson's creations (Thunderbirds etc). Successive British governments have sought to discourage any interest in human spaceflight. I suspect this is because
  1. It might cost money
  2. It might encourage us to be proud of our achievements (and that is absolutely "a bad thing" for everybody is supposed to be equal)
  3. Politicians don't generally understand science. Spending money on a Millenium Dome, or hosting Olympic and Football World Cup events are okay since these are "Arts" orientated and populist (even though they plunge the nation into penury)
I remain to be proved wrong about a stamp issue.

Don't worry, one day a S/S or stamp issue will honor Helen Sharman and the other Brits who have 'flown the flag' in space-after all, if they can issue stamps for Wallace & Gromit, why not for someone who rides a rocket into orbit? Besides, with Tim Peake now in the ESA astronaut corps, he could be part of an omnibus issue honoring spaceflight in the near future.

All times are CT (US)
