I have recently seen on auction STS-10 covers signed by Brand, Gibson, McCandles, McNair and Stewart... the STS-41B crew.

To my knowledge STS-10 was canceled with Ken Mattingly in command and when the tenth shuttle mission was re-scheduled NASA changed the mission assignment method (STS-41B).

Was there ever an official cover with the STS-41B patch? And if not is this the reason the STS-41B crew signed the STS-10 cover?

Ken Mattingly was assigned to the STS-10 DOD mission that was delayed due to the IUS problems on STS-6. That mission eventually launched as STS-51C in 1985. Can we see a scan of the cover?

Without having seen the cover the possibility exists that whoever made the cover or got the cover signed was under the impression that 41B was STS-10, since it was the tenth shuttle flight.

That's what I thought. Because the date stamp was close to launch date and the signatures look authentic to me.

I was wondering though if there ever was an STS-41B mission cover with the mission patch. I have never seen one.

I believe you will find that eBay lot 14042101621 is such a cover. I also think I have such a cover tucked away somewhere.

All times are CT (US)
