For the 50th anniversary of Explorer 1, how many special post cancels are schedule? And Cape Canaveral Post Office will have a special cancel or not? I have two blank covers already signed by Van Allen and Pickering and I would have one with 50th special cancel from Cape Canaveral if one exists.

Thanks
LadyCosmos

You saw it here first...

This is the official, USPS-approved design for the commemorative cancellation to be used at the Cape Canaveral postal station for Explorer 1's anniversary on January 31.

The cancel was designed by collectSPACE member Joel Katzowitz.

Space Coast Cover Service will be producing commemorative cachets with attached gantry pieces from Complex 26 and 33-cent Explorer 1 stamps that were issued in 1999, along with special "photo-image" stamps honoring America's first satellite (Ken Havekotte has promised images of the covers to be added to this thread when they are available).

Wow. Congratulations, Joel. Sweet design. A few years ago I was fortunate to attend a lecture presentation Joel did about the many official postal cancels he has done over the past several years. He displayed some of the custom patch designs he has done for various shuttle crews. It was neat to talk to him about his working so closely with Alan Shepard when Joel did much of the original design and layout for the Astronaut Hall of Fame Museum. He's a first-rate guy. Way to go!

Can anything have a stamp cancel on it? For example, I have a Van Allen-signed 'Time' cover about Explorer I.

Just curious,

Jay -- I'll be happy to postmark your Time-signed cover at the Cape P.O. for you, but just include a SASE for its return. Email me off list.

In regards to the Explorer 1 postmark from Spain, does Spain also have a policy of postmarking mail after the date of postmark (like the grace period here in the US of 30 days)?

Officially the answer is no, but when writing from abroad and asking nicely I have never been refused. Give it a try. The postage rate for covers from Spain to the US is 78 Euro-cents (domestic is 30c). They are likely to return the cover within an official mail envelope.

For the unlikely case you should fail, I will have a few spare copies to sell.

I wanted to post the correct address for sending covers:

8700 Astronaut Blvd.
Cape Canaveral, FL 32920
321-783-3163

The incorrect address of 8500 was previously posted. Hope this helps.

All times are CT (US)
