SPACE PHILATELY CONTEST #3 Shown here is a photo of the twin anchors of the USS Donner (LSD-20) following the scrapping of this vessel earlier this year. The photo was taken by Al Halfrey, a former member of the crew, and is used here with permission. His article on the history of the USS Donner and its eventual scrapping will be published in a future issue of the Astrophile, official bi-monthly journal of the Space Unit. The question for this contest is: For which Mercury mission was the USS Donner the recovery ship and who was aboard the Mercury capsule? The first person to reply to this contest at my e-mail address with the correct answers will receive official crew photos of the STS-108 and STS-112 crews supplied by Space Unit KSC Correspondent Ken Havekotte. I think it was the MA-4 flight. Wasn't there a chimp onboard this flight? ------------------ John Macco Vice President Space Unit Shady Side, Md. |

The USPS cancel for the 30th Anniversary of the Apollo/Soyuz mission is available free of charge to all collectors who send a stamped self-addressed envelope (SASE) to the Sparta, WI address mentioned in the first item in this Capsule Comments thread. The COVER mentioned in Eurpspace's posting is a cacheted COVER issued by the museum. The USPS covers will be uncacheted, unless you send the USPS envelopes with a cachet of some kind. |

And another fun fact to know and tell about the Donner - three weeks after recovering Ham, it recovered the unmanned (and unchimped) MA-2 capsule. |

Astro Bill,You are right - the covers sold by the museum are cacheted cover. However, when sending your own covers to the post office, they are NOT free of charge. You still need to put a 37c stamp on the cover, another 37c on the outer envelope, and maybe another 37c for a return envelope. That costs you a total of $1.11 for your own blank cover. My maths are right, are they?

I am sure that all space cover collectors know what a SSAE is and that it includes a 37c stamp. Your posting regarding the museum cover may have given some collectors the impression that they must send $2.50 for the FREE cancel that I mentioned at the beginning of this thread. What I meant by "free of Charge" is that you do NOT have to write a check for $2.50 if you just want the FREE cancel. This also applies to all cancels mentioned in Capsule Comments #1 - #3. |

I have many more photos of the USS Donner (LSD-20) both while it was active and on its way to be scrapped. Would anyone like to see a few more? They were supplied by former Donner crewman Al Halfrey. His article on the USS Donner will appear in a future issue of the Astrophile of the Space Unit. However, because of space limitations in this b-monthly journal, only a few photos will be published and they will not be in color. This is from: http://www.homestead.com/USSDONNERLSD20/files/HamRecovery/HamRecovery.html The USS Donner, teamed with an embarked Marine Corps helicopter, successfully recovered the Mercury Capsule used in Project Mercury Test MR 2 Tuesday (January 31, 1961), after the space vehicle was fired from Cape Canaveral, Fla. with a chimpanzee aboard.
