Just got the May 2007 American Philatelist (journal of the American Philatelic Society). On page 426 is a great article entitled "A New Era in Space Cover Collecting" by Ray Cartier, describing the flights and covers for SpaceShipOne. Also on page 416 is a photo of a NSTL Shuttle Engine Test cover noting that these are one of the prime sources of "L-Perf" 13 Cent Eagle & Shield stamp Sc#1596d. L-Perfs and their usage on space covers of the mid-'70's was discussed in the Astrophile in the late '80's/early '90's in an article by yours truly.
