Surprising that no one has mentioned & alerted cover collectors about the USS Lake Champlain MR-3 Prime Recovery Ship cover now on eBay. As the seller states, only 44 are known and are rarely offered. This one is a beauty and, as the seller states, is the "crown jewel" of space covers. It hasn't reached its reserve & has a bid of $510 now with less than 3 days to go. (3944269864). BMc |

Good catch Bob! This looks to be one of the better Lake C's that are out there, and there aren't many to begin with... |

It sold for $1,000 with only 6 different bidders. I'm surprised for two reasons: that the reserve was only $1,000 and that it didn't sell for more - much more. These MR-3 Lake Champlain PRS covers have always been at the top of most space cover collectors' want lists and even years ago they sold for more than this relatively low amount. Funny - in comparison, many Armstrong uninscribed WSS portraits, even some that could be considered questionable, sell for much more than this amount, while one of the rarest & most significant early space collectibles sells for maybe 1/2 what one of the numerous Armstrong uninscribed WSSs sell for. I guess that it boils down to the fact that the holidays are a bad time to sell. Obviously a good time to buy though! Congrats Apollonaut! |

I think that the market for recovery covers is generally down, no matter what the event. Even scarcer recoveries, including Beck and Captain's covers, don't fetch what they used to. With the last ship recovery in 1975 with ASTP, I am not sure that newer collectors "connect" as much with that part of space missions. David | |
