I recently came across a couple USS Kearsarge MA-9 recovery covers which I believe to be captains covers but can't tell for sure (I can't find any info on them). Does anyone know what one would look like and the value of such a cover? Thanks - Dan |

Per e-mail request, the cover has the red stamp cache with machine cancel and what looks to be the captains signature diagonally in the upper left corner. The captain of the Kearsarge at this time was Eugene P Rankin and the signature appears to be "E P Rankin" in blue ink. The cover has a Project Mercury 4 cent stamp as well as a 1 cent andrew Jackson.Any help is appreciated - Dan |

Dan, Did you check out Dennis Dillman's excellent Website, "When spaceships went splash."? A link to it is here in "Stamps & Covers" - Go to Dennis' posting of May 16th, where he gives links to his three virtual exhibits & he shows an MA-9 USS Kearsarge cover that he states is a Captain's cover (To any who have an interest in space covers or early space & aviation, but haven't checked out Dennis' 3 sites, you need to check them out now). Thanks Bob.What I have then appears to be a Prime recovery cover signed by the captain. I can live with that. Dan |

Wow! You guys are fast! My wife dragged me out shopping (oy!) and by the time we got back, this thread was both started and settled!Anyway, for the MA-8 and MA-9 recoveries, the covers that Captain Rankin of the Kearsarge sent out were sent under his corner card (return address) and as official mail (no stamp - Postage and Fees Paid Navy Department) with a filler describing the recovery. However, Rankin did sign a bunch of the other stamped, recovery ship covers for both the MA-8 and 9 recovery. I don't know what the story is behind those signatures. Hope that helps a little. Well, indirectly you answered this for us. So thanks again! BTW, what do you think one of these is valued at? It is a little out of my expertise. Thanks - Dan |

Well, just off the top of my head I'd say you could get $20 to $30 with Rankin's signature on eBay. Generally $10 to $20 without the signature. Bob Mc or Ken H may have some other opinions and hopefully they will ring in too. |
