Does anyone know if the Cape Canaveral Post Office will make this cancel available on a walk-up basis on Feb. 20th? It is of course President's Day and post offices are closed. I know you have 30 days to mail in items for the cancel but I will be there on the 20th before heading to Launch Complex 14. Would like to take cancelled covers out there for the anniversary. |

Off hand, no, the Cape postal station will be closed on the 20th, however, you can visit the post office afterwards on another day and request the cancel. I'll be planning to handle and process lots of anniversary covers all throughout late Feb./March, therefore, I'll be happy to accept any requests either mailed to my address or even for holding at the Cape Canaveral post office. |

Ken, that's terrific to know, thanks. I'll be sending covers for canceling to you this week. Does that mean I can send you covers for Cape Canaveral pictorial postmark as well as Cape Canaveral circular with the four bar cancel? Any other cancels available like Kennedy Space Center? What is the last date you can receive covers for canceling? |

Yes, you can send me anything you want for Cape cancels of both varieties. But there is no 4-killer bar device in use at the Cape Canaveral postal station. Instead, the postal unit there currently uses a bullseye strike with no attached bars whatsoever. Of course, though, other Florida Space Coast postal cancellations are available, but with no special anniversary pictorial uses, at Kennedy Space Center (both facilities), Patrick AFB, Cocoa Beach, Merritt Island and Titusville. If time permits, I may travel to all the above mentioned P.O.s in having some covers processed. Cachet covers are currently being produced for the big MA-6/Glenn golden anniversary with at least 2 or 3 different designs. To answer Chris' last question, it would be best in trying to have all covers requesting Cape cancels in to me by late March if possible. |

How many dual cancels did everyone get yesterday, with most post offices closed?Got four in Washington DC! I know Houston and Cape have official cancels, but what about other locations? This was both a space event and a FDC!

What stamp did you use for the cancellation on Feb 20, 2012? |

My firm is planning to use several stamp varieties for Feb. 20th cancels this year.My best choices would be the new "Alan Shepard: First American in Space" forever issue along with added 4-cent "U.S. Man In Space — Project Mercury" stamps first issued for Glenn's orbital flight in 1962. Other older stamps that could be included would be the Robert Goddard 8-cent airmail issue that also depicts a Mercury Atlas launch from Pad 14, a 29-cent issue released in 1992 with a Mercury spacecraft image, and a "Return to Space" 33-cent stamp in 2000 commemorating Glenn's shuttle flight that includes a Mercury capsule in the design as well. There are others that could be used, but for now, these would be my favorite selections. |
