From Spaceflight Now photographer Michael Cain (via Twitter):
Stumbled across this SpaceX Crew-4 patch! Such a unique design, can’t wait to hear more on what everything in this design symbolizes.

It was made by Aviator Gear.
National Aeronautics and Space Administration Dragon Crew 4 patch. Your NASA patches are 4” tall, and 100% embroidered with Velcro backing.

Any word on if/when these patches will be available for purchase in quantities less than 25?

It is not yet clear if this is the crew patch, a payload patch or possibly fan art.

That said, the SpaceX Patch List Collectors (SPLC) has said it will be selling this patch to its members. It should be available in about two weeks.

It looks like this is an official design as it's being worn by Samantha Cristoforetti's trainers at Star City, seen here and here in her Flickr album.

Think that's fellow Crew-4 astronaut Kjell Lindgren, not a trainer.

From Crew-4 commander Kjell Lindgren (via Facebook):
Excited to finally share our official Dragon Crew-4 patch!

The official description reads:

Rays of light streak across the inky blackness of space, preceding the dawn of a new chapter in human spaceflight.

The free-flying Dragon capsule forms the thorax of the central element of the patch, the Dragonfly – a beautiful and agile flyer. For many, the dragonfly represents transformation and good fortune.

On its way to the International Space Station, the capsule appears suspended in low Earth orbit with the Earth below and Moon above.

Four bright stars represent the four crewmembers’ families and their steadfast patience, love and support.

The remaining multitude of stars represent the countless members of the NASA, SpaceX and international partner teams, whose ingenuity, vigilance and tireless work has made this mission possible.

Best of all — it was designed by the brilliant Alexandra Lindgren!

This seams to be a strange time and day for AB Emblem to release and add this SpaceX Crew-4 patch to their website, at 20:30 pm CT on a Sunday night (02:30 am GMT early Monday morning here in the U.K.).
  • 438876 A-B Emblem Made In USA 01/22 20
  • 438876 A-B Emblem Made In USA 0222 20
  • 438876 A-B Emblem Made In USA 02/24 22 (Date Code Error seen on eBay on 15th Feb 2024, should read 02/22 20)
  • 438876 A-B Emblem Made In China 02/22 40
  • 438876 A-B Emblem Made In China 02/22/40
  • 438876 A-B Emblem Made In USA 03/22 20
  • 438876 A-B Emblem Made In China 03/22/40
  • 438876 A-B Emblem Made In China 07/22/40
There may be an earlier November or December 2021 date code, but they have not yet been confirmed.

It looks like early production run examples of this Crew-4 patch have now been found with "Made In China" and China date codes on them.

That's going to put the embroiderer to the test with those tiny names.

On her first spaceflight, Samantha Cristoforetti introduced embroidered zipper pulls (or tags) with designs related to her patches and missions. Now that she is a member of Crew-4, Cristoforetti and her three crewmates have been seen with new Crew-4 themed tags.

Seen here: Team Crew-4, Dragon Crew-4 Remove Before Launch and Expedition 67. A tag for Cristoforetti's Minerva ESA mission has also been seen.

What wonderful years of Gemini and Apollo, with a flight a patch...!

Both Gemini and Apollo had more than one emblem/patch per mission: both programs had recovery ship patches and during Apollo, there were Grumman lunar module patches.

The Space Force and SpaceX patches are in the same spirit as those earlier alternate designs.

I disagree. There are currently one, two or three (if not more) "Mission Patches" per flight. I insist: Gemini and Apollo only had one "Mission Patch". I am not talking (nor have I talked before) about other emblems associated with each flight.

I would contend that the Space Force releasing a patch for their launch team is the same as the Navy releasing a patch for their recovery team.

As for the SpaceX patch, I see that being like a contractor patch (like the Grumman lunar module patches), but I also understand your position.

Of course, during Gemini and Apollo, the crews answered to just one organization (NASA), whereas now they have at least two separate ground teams. So perhaps two patches are appropriate to represent the two sides of the same mission.

There are no wrong answers.

To Jorge's preference, there is really one patch for each mission. It's the one the crew wears on their flight suits.

But I can understand why each organization would want to create a "mission patch" to mark their participation in the flight.

Some collectors might feel the need to collect every patch from each organization, some won't. It's a personal decision.
