On the two missions with both Tom Stafford and Gene Cernan (Gemini 9 and Apollo 10) the mission patches have a unique 'shield' shape. Is there a story behind why Stafford and Cernan chose that shape?

Also note that another member of the Apollo 10 crew, John Young, incorporated a shield design in the Apollo 16 mission patch.
