I wrote Charles Schulz about the Skylab Medical Experiment Altitude Test (SMEAT) patch and got the answer that the rope signified Snoopy being grounded (note he has his flying ace getup), appropriate since SMEAT would not be flying.On further thought: There exists a run of Peanuts strips — I think the one where Charlie Brown has to take him to the vet — and Snoopy is in his Flying Ace garb. Charlie Brown finally gets him, tying a rope around his neck. Snoopy waits a moment, headbutts poor Charlie Brown, wrecks Linus and his wagon (which to Snoopy is an enemy supply train) and makes a run for freedom. (Last panel quoting from memory, Linus to Charlie Brown: "Why can't you have a normal dog?") The rope around his neck on the SMEAT patch was probably derived from that.  |

You can read an entire chapter devoted to SMEAT in the book "Homesteading Space" by David Hitt, Owen Garriott and Joe Kerwin. It is a very enlightening read. |

Can anybody throw any light on the history of this patch currently featured in the next Lunar Legacies auction?I have only seen Beta cloth examples before, although a quick trawl shows one being listed on eBay in 2009.  |

"Relics of the Space Race" (Russ Still) discusses the SMEAT embroidered patches, suggesting that none were used officially at the time of the test. That said, Still points out the difference between vintage examples and modern replicas — the earlier missing the copyright information ("© United Features Syndicate 1972") that appeared in the original NASA art. But Randy Hunt also produced a modern knockoff that is missing the copyright; his can be told apart from vintage versions from the stitching and courser detail. I know of four versions of this patch. - The one shown above is the original. Note brown goggles and red scarf.
- The beta cloth version
- Reproduction #1 with red scarf and red goggles
- Reproduction #2 with brown scarf and brown goggles and United Features copyright info under Snoopy.

One of my favorite patches was from the lesser-known SMEAT (Skylab Medical Experiment Altitude Test), which took place for 56 days (July 26-Sep. 19, 1972) in a simulated Skylab Mission. The astronaut subjects were Robert Crippen, Karol Bobko and William Thornton. Editor's note: Threads merged. |

This Snoopy SMEAT design produced by the MSC Stamp Club in Houston is about as "official" as the other versions depicted in this thread? |

Looks like AB Emblem has begun producing these (again?). Similar to the first version at the top of this page.  |

This new Skylab SMEAT patch has the SKU patch design number 414570, but does not have any embedded labels on them. |

This AB Emblem Smeat patch is once again available to buy from the AB Emblem website. Hopefully this time there are embedded labels on the backs of them? |

Last week AB Emblem began offering the Snoopy SMEAT patch once again. It has been out of stock for sometime and now is up on their website for sale. |
