As a fundraiser for Taking Up Space, and in association with Space Hipsters and Captain Robert "Hoot" Gibson, I've produced a set of special "Signature Edition" patches based on the original STS-27 mission patch.

These have been produced exclusively for this fundraiser, with all funds going directly to the charity.

The 27 gold and 100 silver examples of the patch (with the embroidered signature on the patch executed in metallic gold/silver thread) come on numbered display cards hand signed by Hoot Gibson himself. A version with the embroidered signature executed in white thread is available without a display card.

To reserve one of these patches please visit this post on the Space Hipsters Facebook group.

Note that at the time of writing the gold edition is sold out, but some of the 100 silver patches (with signed cards) remain open for reservation at $50 each, and the regular versions are available at $12 each.

The original pre-launch announcement for these patches can be found here.

I'm glad to see that you beat me to posting this. I'm sure that there are more than a few people here that would be interested. Thank you!

I guess the other nice Hoot Gibson quote (one that I find more useful in life, to be honest, because dying doesn't seem such a nice thing to do even when not tensed-up) did not fit in the STS-27 patch. "No matter how bad things are, you can always make them worse." Maybe it would have fit (and would have been fitting!) on the larger Mir-patch.

Hoot told me about a design the crew did (I don't remember which mission it was for) that had a dragon torching the USSR because Abbey wanted a dragon. When I saw this thread title, I thought maybe this was that design.

The joke patch was for STS-61C (originally 41F) and the dragon was attacking a Soviet space module rather then country below.

Just to note that one week after launch the limited edition fundraiser patches on display cards hand-signed by Robert "Hoot" Gibson are almost sold out.

The 27 "gold" edition patches sold in the first few hours but a few of the 100 "silver" edition patches remain available at $50. The regular patches without display cards are also available at $12 each.

Every cent of this money goes direct to the non-profit organization Taking Up Space, and worldwide delivery is being provided for free.

See details on how to order here.

I've been told there we're down to single digits on the silver patches now. If you're still hesitating, now's the time to make your mind up.

My gold patch (#25/27) arrived today and I am really impressed by the entire presentation. The backer card being individually signed and numbered is a nice touch and the ability for the embroidery to reproduce Hoot's autograph is really outstanding.

My only regret is that someone didn't think of this earlier and we didn't have signature versions for every astronaut, from Alan Shepard to today. I hope Taking Up Space will continue with the format, though, as it really adds a new category to space patch collecting while benefiting a great cause.

Thanks for the positive feedback Robert. I'm very pleased with the way this project worked out, and most importantly it's raised a significant sum for Taking Up Space.

We will certainly be looking at the possibility of producing further "signature edition" patches, but I don't think I'll be mentioning this to Lois Huneycutt of Space Hipsters just yet as she's still working hard to prepare and ship the remaining orders.

I wanted to say how impressed I am with the patch, presentation and fulfillment process, they really knocked it out of the park. Thank you.

Thank you for the kind words, everyone. I just wanted to point out that, while all the limited edition signature-card patches are gone, we still have some of the white-thread open edition patches for sale. There are instructions for ordering in the first post in this thread, and has been mentioned several times, 100% of the proceeds will go to Taking Up Space.

First astronaut to test land a space shuttle 'signs' off on new fundraising patches

A new offer for an astronaut-inspired space patch has the power to "beam up" Native American girls to Space Camp.

The "Signature Edition Enterprise Commander Fred W. Haise, Jr." patch, created by and available from the almost 35,000-member Space Hipsters group on Facebook, celebrates the first astronaut to test land a space shuttle orbiter. The limited edition embroidered emblem, which features Haise's (fascimile) autograph sewn into the design, is set to go on sale on Monday (Nov. 28).

The Haise Signature edition patches are now on sale.

About 70% of the gold thread are already gone, but we have plenty of the white thread and quite a few silver thread (with signature card) left. If you're interested or have questions, please get in touch with me at HistorianMom@gmail.com.

Just a quick update — the gold patches are now sold out. Silvers are still available — all on numbered display cards hand-signed by Fred Haise, as are the regular patches without display cards.

I expect that the silver patches will sell out within the next week or so, so if you're interested you should check out the details on this post.

Son's design for astronaut-father's mission patch put into production 40 years later

A son's 40-year-old sketch for his astronaut-father's mission patch has been made into a new embroidered emblem to raise funds for the next generation of space explorers.

The "Space Hipsters" Facebook group revealed on Friday (March 31) the next release in their "Signature" space patch series benefiting Taking Up Space, a non-profit that underwrites trips for Native American girls to attend Space Camp. The limited edition badges each feature the embroidered autograph of a former NASA astronaut as part of a design that highlights an aspect of their spaceflight career.

Chickasaw Nation astronaut 'signs' patches for Native American girls' Space Camp fund

The first enrolled member of a Native American tribe to fly into space is helping inspire a new generation of Native American girls to possibly to do the same with a limited edition emblem that celebrates their shared heritage and his time as a NASA astronaut.

John Herrington, who flew on a 2002 space shuttle mission and is a member of the Chickasaw Nation, helped design and provided his autograph for the latest "Signature Edition" patch offered by the nearly 50,000-member Space Hipsters group on Facebook. The collectible is intended a fundraiser for the non-profit Taking Up Space, which has created a 36-week science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) curriculum and organizes trips for middle-school-age Native American girls to the U.S. Space and Rocket Center in Huntsville, Alabama to attend Space Camp.

Thanks for the great write-up Robert. In case anyone missed out on the Mullane patches I believe there may be something like 5 of those silver limited edition left, so you'd better hurry.
