I have created a special commemorative patch for the return of crewed launches from America's Space Coast.

In response to the ongoing pandemic, NASA requested that people not come to Florida and instead watch online, so the patch resembles the view of the launch as seen on a smartphone watching NASA TV.

To illustrate "social distancing," the view is from my town of Titusville without the crowds along the Indian River. I added the banner headline with the secondary subtitle explaining the special significance of this launch and time.

The patches are in production and will be available in late June. They will be signed and numbered by me. This first edition is limited to 250.

If you are interested in purchasing this patch, I direct you to these authorized retailers whose commitment made this project possible:

The design was created by artist Tim Gagnon who has worked with NASA Astronauts helping them design their mission patches since 2004. He was assisted by Dr. Jorge Cartes of Madrid, Spain. Since he is helping to homeschool them during this pandemic, Tim also consulted with his grandsons Tyler and Jack.

Florida Today interviewed Tim about designing this patch:
"Well NASA doesn't want people to come to this launch because of the chances of transmitting the virus. So, most of the people that see this launch, they're going to be seeing it digitally and virtually," Gagnon said. "So I decided to insert that image (of the VAB and pad 39A with the rocket) into the shape of a smartphone and ... if they're watching it virtually, there's going to be the NASA TV logo in the corner of the screen"

The patch, which looks as if you're watching the launch through NASA TV on your smartphone device, is meant to illustrate what NASA is hoping will happen on launch day: people viewing the launch through a technological device.

It has been brought to my attention that there may be some confusion between this patch and another that I designed. This post will attempt to explain what is happening.

When I designed this "smart phone" patch I offered it to three retailers I have a long standing relationship with: Skyforce Space patches, The Space Store and to eBay seller USAFSPACE.com.

When the prototype was made I showed it to all three retailers and asked how many do you want? I told them that I will base my order on what you say because this first edition will be limited. I have to pay when I ordered them so I need your payment in advance as well. They each responded and began selling.

These limited edition patches are in production, I will receive them the third week of June and ship them out to the retailers immediately.

Well, the response exceeded all of our expectations and all three asked for more. I responded that they could continue selling because there will be a version 2.0 and all orders will be fulfilled. Same price, same arrangement.

I couldn’t submit the art for version 2.0 until yesterday (May 30) because it includes the launch date. The first edition will be signed and numbered as promised but version 2.0 will be larger and not numbered but still signed.

A second, different patch (Virtual NASA Social) was a collaboration between Skyforce Space Patches and myself, hence Skyforce is the sole retailer. I apologize for any confusion this has caused. Everyone who has purchased a patch will receive it, but understand manufacturing takes time.

As promised the DM-2 Launch America version 2.0 have arrived. Two days late due to the Independence Day holiday. These have a new caption and the launch date and time as if this was the lock screen on a smartphone.

Today I shipped those ordered to Brett Anderson at The Space Store, Joe Fricano at SkyForce Space Patches and eBay seller: usafspace. Each retailer should have them in hand by Tuesday/Wednesday of next week.

I know it seems like these took a long time but embroidery takes longer than printing and I could not place my order until two days after launch.

I appreciate all who ordered them and hope this is a sought after addition to your collections.

If you have any questions or require any additional information, please don’t hesitate to contact me.

All times are CT (US)
