A long time in preparation, Spacepatches.nl announces a new version of the Aurora 7 capsule art patch.

The art was designed by Cece Bibby for the Mercury capsule that took the second American to orbit; Scott Carpenter.

An earlier depiction of the art has been available as a patch for some time. However, we felt it deserved a better rendering, as the earlier patch has a red 7 instead of a blue one, incorrect colours in the aurorae and a font that differs from the one used in Bibby's artwork.

This new version corrects all that. We had planned to release this patch at an earlier date, to coincide with the Soyuz TMA-07M patch, as these share a "blue 7/Bibby" theme. At the time, the production of special Expedition 37 patches kept us 'volunteers' pretty busy, hence the delay.

Scott's initials hallmarked at the bottom are an elegant addition to this patch. Very nice.

There are no plans to produce the other ones as well. It was meant to fit in with the existing series as produced by Eagle One Aerospace (which had it with a red seven) in the 90's. This patch, with a red seven, lead to the discussion I had with Cece, which in turn was the inspiration for part of the Soyuz TMA-07M design.

I would have loved to see a patch with the blue seven in space with Roman's crew, but as Luc stated, we simply had no energy left to take care of it because of all the hard work to get Fyodor his Expedition 37 patch. In hindsight, I wished we had done so, as a tribute to Cece 'Baby' (who passed away just weeks before the TMA-07M launch) and 'Scotty,' who was still alive at the time.

Great looking patch and accurate. Thanks for making a long overdue correction. I'm ready to order.

I have the original full set and look forward to replacing the "red 7" with this correct blue one.

Great job! I really like the blue "7". I didn't know that it was supposed to be blue, I've only seen it with a red "7".

By the way, has there been other Mercury patches that you created, specifically Friendship 7? Thanks.

This is a very nice compliment to the set!

Does anyone have any knowledge as to how many of the original Eagle One Aerospace Mercury 4" sets were made?

Originally only five complete sets with a Certificate of Authenticity dated 01-01-1994, a Certificate of Ownership also dated 01-01-1994, and a large poster which you could attach all six patches to. (My Certificates say 'No.3 of 5 Sets').

But later on extra patches were manufactured by Eagle One Aerospace and sold either as sets, (without COA's or posters), or as single patches. But I don't know how many extra patches were produced and sold in this way. (25 to 50 maybe? But certainly no more than that).

The poster is 24" high x 36" long, and is numbered 03/05. It is also signed on the front by the artist, Jerry L. Bowman, the manufacturer Kevin Dargie of Signspot, and Connie Knapik (of Accent Framing), patches produced by - Space Coast International, Titusville, Florida. (1994).

Update 09-09-19; Today I have sold the original complete set No.3 of 5 to Paul J. Brennan.

Does anyone know who produced this addition to the set:

I just acquired an original set of these Mercury patches and would love to add both this proper Aurora 7 as well as the patch above...

I'm curious as to the history of the patch. It looks like a cross between the "original" logo of FREEDOM 7 and his cancelled Gemini flight (Gemini program logo).

The artwork is actually on the Mercury spacecraft #15B displayed at the Smithsonian Udvar-Hazy museum. This was the ship earmarked for Al Shepard's 3 day MA-10 mission which was ultimately canceled.

Rather than a Gemini program symbol, that is the Roman numeral 2 to signify the name "Freedom 7 II."

I have no way of knowing at what point that artwork was applied or if Shepard had anything to do with it.

Great work you guys, thanks for making it available.

Is this Deke Slayton-initialed Gemini patch (seen on eBay; 131313952680) intended to be a compliment to the Gemini logo series discussed above? Does anyone know the origin of this particular patch?

Yes, this is the final patch of my 50th Anniversary Mercury patch series.

It was intentionally subdued due to that fact that Deke became a person out of the spotlight when he was grounded. — Tim

Liem, any traction on creating either the Delta 7 - Deke Slayton, or Freedom 7-II - Alan Shepard patches?

Let me see what I can do. I have an active Kickstarter going, but perhaps when this one wraps up I can do a double one for those patches.

Once I wrap up my current Kickstarter (4-6 weeks) I am going to do a Kickstarter campaign with three options:
  • Deke Slayton - Delta 7
  • Alan Shepard - Freedom 7-II
  • Dyna Soar program patch (from Neil Armstrong's collection, see this thread)
I'll set it up so you can buy one of each, mix and match or all three. Updates to follow.

I had voted on the Delta 7 patch years ago and I wondered what had become of the campaign.

Any possibility of making a new limited edition of the whole set, as it was done a few years ago with the Gemini? I could finally complete my entire collection and I think a lot of people would sign up for it.

I don't know if Mr. Bowman is still active, I have purchased items from him somewhat recently but I do not think he's still producing patches. I do not know if this is something Jacques and hoorenz or others have the interest in taking on, either?

If I were to take it on, after confirming the artwork is in the public domain, reproducing a new set of round, Mercury capsule art patches with "Delta 7" and "Freedom 7-II" added, would cost around $2000 (accounting for production costs and various fees) to produce and, if the price were around $75 for each set of 8, I would have to sell around 25 sets to break even.

If you do the entire set please reposition the blue '7' and colored Aurora circles on Aurora 7 per spacecraft image. The re-do a few years ago centered it instead.

I am still planning to produce the extra two patches at some point soon. I am still looking at the logistics of a completely new set of Mercury art patches and how that will look.
