International Space Station (ISS) Expedition 63 mission insignia, incorporating a multitude of elements, such as a stylized 63 in the orbit traces, a boot print on the lunar surface, and the initials of the three crewmen, Andrei Babkin, Nikolai Tikhonov and Chris Cassidy: АБ НТ CC.

Outstanding! Looks like another one of Blake Dumesnil's designs? Anyone?

One of the best crew patches I've seen in a while in my opinion, I'm interested in seeing how the embroidered version looks.

Patch description from Chris Cassidy:
The Expedition 63 patch represents an intersection of the past and the beginning of a new dawn in human spaceflight as we continue to inhabit the International Space Station (ISS), aim towards returning to the moon and plan for the journey to Mars.

Thirteen illuminated stars along the top of the patch commemorate the Apollo 13 celebrating its 50th anniversary during Expedition 63. The swoosh in the shape of the number "63" orbiting around the earth and moon honors the Apollo program and the future missions to go beyond low earth orbit.

The atom, shown overlaid on a vibrant sunrise, is the Expedition 63 crew's call sign symbolizing the energy to revolve, or orbit around a nucleus or in their case, the Earth. The international crew's initials on the outside ring depicts the importance of the collaboration in preserving the ISS as a microgravity and space environment research laboratory.

Based on the patch shown on A-B Emblem's site, the patch is another minimally embroidered silkscreen design.

According to some reliably information these Expedition 63 patches were dispatched from Weaverville to their agents on Monday 10th February. These patches have the SKU patch design number 419926, I'm not sure of the date codes at this moment in time?

Not one of my favourite patches, I would of preferred a fully or part embroidered version.

I agree. This looks like poor execution. It's not good when the original looks like a knock-off. I hope it looks better in person because their scan makes it look blurry and washed out compared to the contrast of the original artwork.

I can now confirm the first date code reported to me for the Expedition 63 first version patches is;
  • 419926 A-B Emblem 0220 20 (USA)
  • 419926 A-B Emblem 0120 20 (USA) seen photo on 09-04-20

I see no reason why this design could not have been done with embroidery. I used to think the definition of a patch was "embroidered."

Yes I quite agree. I would like to see a good embroidered version produced by AB Emblem, but the chances of that being done is very remote?

They are partially embroidered to raise the details but there is no colored thread on top of the dye submlimated image. They are more vivid in hand than the scan on the website would indicate, but the image feels a bit blurry. The cut edge also varies in width and accuracy on both examples I have.

Image of the patch from The Space Store shows a more favourable view of its quality.

This patch will need to be changed. Andrei Babkin and Nikolai Tikhonov have been replaced on the crew by Anatoli Ivanishin and Ivan Vagner for medical reasons.

Could this mean a second effort at an embroidered patch with the crew change announced?

I fear it will be a revised silk screened printed patch again.

Received mine today. AB Emblem completely missed the mark with this washed out blurred interpretation of the original artwork. No more silk-screened patches please...

I know others know this, but perhaps a good reminder: AB Emblem produces what its customer wants. In this case, the customer is the Expedition 63 crew (and NASA).

It is possible that Chris Cassidy was shown other versions of the patch and decided the silk-screened approach worked the best. I don't know if that happened, but if the crew was unhappy with the result, it would carry more weight than what, we, the public thinks about it.

In my opinion, an embroidered patch would have been something perfect for this emblem. The end result of what AB has produced is crap that completely detracts from what could have been one of the most beautiful patches in history.

Have received my patch and have to agree with the above comments. A beautiful design ruined by poor execution.

Of note, mine, from Skyforce, has no embedded label.

One detail that is feels most lost with the dye sublimated process is the footprint on the moon.

I am not sure who makes the final call on the process utilized for translating the design to embroidery, but I will say that when I designed this patch, it was my full expectation and intention that it would be something that could translate well to a full embroidered product. I never thought it would be necessary to print any of the details as it seemed manageable to properly stitch everything. There have been much more complex designs than this one.

I have yet to see one of the these in person and hope that it looks better to the naked eye so I don't want to pass judgment but admit I am disappointed in what I have seen thus far from the pics. Ultimately, the manner in which the design is translated isn't up to us designers.

I do want to thank everyone so much for the kind words regarding the design though! It means a lot! I really aimed to make something beautiful and artistic with this design. — Blake

Thank you for sharing the design information, from the get go I thought it was a beautiful and visually striking effort.

I too hope that an embroidered version of this design will exist at some point in the future.

AB Emblem has just updated its Expedition 63 patch page on its website.
Expedition 63 had a crew change and the new version has the astronauts initials removed.

The AB Emblem website now (as of March 13) shows the new revised Expedition 63 patch design, and the new revised SKU patch design number 422231. The date code is not confirmed as yet? 03/19 20 has been reported so far?

The date code for this revised Expedition 63 patch without crew initials is 03/19 20. Yes that is 2019 and not 2020, it's a year error on all the ones reported to me so far.

If anyone has a correct date code 03/20 20 could you post a back image photo/scan here? Many thanks.

I think Cassidy has a new ISS-63 patch on his training suit in Baikonur. But according to Kentavr they have not received new patches from NASA for onboard suits and no ISS-63 patches at all on them.
