NASA Flight Crew Operations Directorate emblem

The Flight Crew Operations Directorate (FCOD) is responsible for overall planning, direction, and management of flight crew operations and Johnson Space Center (JSC) aircraft program activities.

These responsibilities include but are not limited to selecting and training astronaut candidates; determining flight crew training and simulation requirements; recommending specific crew assignments; training and certifying payload specialists; conducting public relations activities in support of NASA programs; participating in development of timelines and procedures; providing flight crew perspective in the development of new programs; and contributing to the development, acquisition, maintenance and operation of training, administrative, and research support aircraft and supporting equipment and facilities at JSC.

The Flight Crew Operations Directorate (2011) emblem was designed by NASA graphics technical lead Sean Collins.

Undoubtedly based primarily on this image of astronaut Joe Tanner taken during the second Hubble servicing mission on STS-82.

Great choice. This is one of my favorite STS era images.

Today AB Emblem has reissued this NASA Flight Crew Operations Directorate emblem on their website with the original old SKU number 234099. This is a 2014 patch design number, but the patch design itself is from 2011, so I am not sure that the date code(s) are from those years or not?

Update: I have just found in my collection two prototype/sample versions of this patch with the following details on old style embedded labels:

  • 234099 Made In USA 03/25 .(March 25th 2014)
  • 234099 Made In USA 04/09 .(April 9th 2014)
I understand this is the first of a number of "older obscure" and limited edition commissioned patches they currently have in stock and will be issuing, or reissuing for sale on their website over the next few months or so.

At this moment in time AB Emblem have issues two date codes for these Flight Crew Operations patches, both are old.
  • 234099 Made In USA 03/25 (March 25th 2014) (a Prototype/Sample run)
  • 234099 Made In USA 04/09 (April 9th 2014) (a Prototype/Sample run)
  • 234099 Made In USA 03/2016 (March 2016 1st known main production run)
  • 234099 A-B Emblem Made In China 01/20 40 (new production run January 2020)
  • 234099 A-B Emblem Made In China 06/20 40
  • 234099 A-B Emblem Made In China 09/20 40
There may well be other date codes between April 2014 and March 2016, and 2017 to 2019? If anyone knows of any other date codes, can they let me know or post them here. Many thanks.

All times are CT (US)
