ISS Expedition 58 mission patch

The International Space Station's (ISS) Expedition 58 begins with the scheduled undocking of Soyuz MS-09. New crew members will arrive shortly thereafter on Soyuz MS-11.

ISS Expedition 58 will be led by commander Aleksei Ovchinin with Roscosmos. His crewmates, all flight engineers, include: Roscosmos cosmonauts Nikolai Tikhonov and Oleg Kononenko; NASA astronauts Nick Hague and Serena Auñón-Chancellor of NASA; and Canadian Space Agency astronaut David Saint-Jacques.

Very nice looking patch. Nick Hague will be our fourth astronaut from Kansas to fly (Engle, Evans, Hawley) into space.

This is an original AB Emblem Expedition 58 "Prototype or Sample" patch with Serena Aunon-Chancellor on has the patch design number 284948 Made In USA 9/1755 date code. The "55" at the end of the date code means that this patch was manufactured on the "sample machine."

The patch shown below has the lighter "gold" thread and not the darker "old gold" thread as found on all the other versions of this original six crew names Expedition 58 patches.

I took this photo in Kentavr-Nauka-Russian firm producing onboard suits for the ISS crews. This is the patch Kentavr gets from NASA office in Moscow.

So far only six date codes have been found/reported on these Expedition 58 (5 crew names) patches. All have the patch design number 294792 and the "A-B Emblem" name and "crown" emblem on the labels.

Four also have "Made In China" under the "A-B Emblem" name.

Update on 22-10-18: There is a "sample" version with date code 0518 55 now reported and seen.

  • 0518 55 (USA) (Sample / should of been crew batch) May 2018.
  • 5/18 20 (USA) (Crew batch)
  • 05/1840 + Made In China
  • 06/1840 + Made In China
  • 07/1840 + Made In China (found in JSC sales packets only so far)
  • 12/1840 + Made In China (found on JSC sales cards only so far)
Update on 26-05-19: Two more Sample patches have come to light.
  • 0318 55 (USA) (Early Sample) March 2018.
  • 1018 55 (USA) (Mid production Sample) October 2018.

With the change in Expedition 57 emblem, how does the Soyuz MS-10 abort affect the Expedition 58 patch, if it does?

Unfortunately that information is not available from AB Emblem. So I can only make a calculated guess and say approximately a few thousand, maybe? Also I would say about 95% of those patches were manufactured in China in just three production runs that are known so far. (See my last post above). Only about 5% were made in Weaverville, NC.

Today at around 17:00 pm GMT (09:00 am PDT, 11:00 am CT), AB Emblem listed all their previous versions of the ISS Expedition 58 patches, including some error "sample" patches. Within less than half an hour all were sold out. (Except the five crew names version).

The patch design numbers may be slightly different on the patches than quoted on the AB Emblem website. Also the date codes are not fully known at this time. I will update patch design numbers and date codes when known/confirmed. The patches are as follows;

  • Six crew names first version with Serena Aunon-Chancellor 284948 Made In USA 9/1755 (5" over-size "Sample" error patch) Only one example known/found.

  • The identical ISS-58 "Sample" patch to the one above but 4", again Only one example known/found.

  • Six crew names first version with Serena Aunon-Chancellor (4") 286536 Made In USA 10/1755

  • Six crew names first version with Serena Aunon-Chancellor (4") 286539 Made In USA 10/1755

  • Six crew names second version with Anne McClain 293391 A-B Emblem 0318 55

  • Six crew names second version with Anne McClain 292408 (294792B) Made In USA 03/18 55 (Manufacturing error of an "over locked with a Ravel-proof border" instead of the requested stitched border). Possibly only ten examples known/found. (This patch was also listed for a short time on 21 January when about five of the possible ten patches were sold?) Removed from website on 22 January.

  • Five crew names third version with Nikolai Tikhonov removed 294792 A-B Emblem (USA) 0518 55 x2

I wish I had one still, hence all the question marks on the patch design numbers and especially the date codes. I miss Ashley Boykin since she moved departments, since then customer relations and communications with AB Emblem sales department has not been very good.

There is no information on when the new three crew names (fourth) version patches will be released?

ISS-58 - Six crew names version with McClain, A-B Emblem packing slip has SKU "290700B", website has SKU "294792B", has no labels on the back.

It is a great pity there are no embedded labels on these two ISS-58 (six crew names) second version, McClain patches, with the "over-locked ravel-proof border." The SKU patch design number should be around the 293391 area for this ISS-58 patch.

The SKU patch design #294792(B) is for the five crew names third version patches. The SKU patch design #290700(B) is for the ISS-60 patches.

I don't know who does the AB Emblem website but whoever it is doesn't seem to have much knowledge of the patches?

Arrivals from the recent lost and found release:
  • ISS-58 six-name "Auñon-Chancellor" packing slip SKU: 286536/286539 Sticker: 286536 10/1755 Made in USA

  • ISS-58 six-name "McClain" packing slip SKU 293391 Sticker: 293391 0318 55 "A-B Emblem" with crown logo
Of note, the six-name "Auñon-Chancellor" version I received lacks the halos around the six brighter lights on the bottom part of the patch, as does the McClain version I received. This varies from the six-name "Auñon-Chancellor" version scanned above in this post.

Many thanks for this information Liem. I hope to expand on this when the Expedition 58 patches I have ordered arrive. (See below).

The scanned original 4" six crew names Expedition 58 with SKU patch design #284948 Made In USA 9/1755 is a "Prototype or Sample" patch, which incidentally has the same SKU number as the over-sized 5" version (according to the AB Emblem website).

It also seams that the patches with halos around the bottom brighter lights are all found on either prototype/sample or border error patches? Along with some which have the extra old gold stitching in the three city lights areas just below the "8" of "58". (Top left patch in the photo above.)

I received my Expedition 58 orders from AB Emblem today. They have sent me the following patches.

Original first six crew names version with Aunon-Chancellor, all with an "old gold" thread:

  • The 5" over-size "Sample" version 284948 Made In USA 9/1755 with six large bright lights all with halos on the bottom part of the patch. (Only one example known).
  • An identical "Sample" patch but in the normal 4" size 284948 Made In USA 9/1755 (I only have one example).
  • 286536 Made In USA 10/1755 with six small bright lights without halos on the bottom part of the patch.
  • 286539 Made In USA 10/1755 with six larger bright lights without halos on the bottom part of the patch.
First revised six crew names version with McClain, all with a "gold" thread;
  • 292408 A-B Emblem 0318 55 "Sample" with six small bright lights without halos on the bottom part of the patch. Also with a darker blue surrounding the "58". Mfg. Error, Over Locked Ravel Proof border. (I only have one example).
  • 293391 A-B Emblem 0318 55 "Sample" with six small bright lights without halos on the bottom part of the patch. Normal stitched border.
  • 294792B ? NO Label "Sample" with six Large bright lights with Halos on the bottom part of the patch. Mfg. Error, Over Locked Ravel Proof border.
Second revision with five crew names version, with a "gold" thread;
  • 294792 A-B Emblem 0518 55 "Sample" with small bright lights without halos on the bottom part of the patch. Normal stitched border.
  • 294792 A-B Emblem 5/18 20 (Crew batch).
All subsequent production runs of the Expedition 58 patches Made In China have a very light gold thread used instead of "gold" or the darker "old gold" thread found on the Made In USA versions, and are without the halos.

I feel there are other "Prototype/Sample" versions or variations of the original and first revised Expedition 58 patches. If anyone has any could they post them here.

AB Emblem has released the Expedition 58 (version four, the three crew names) patch and is listed on their website. It has the SKU patch design number 404934 A-B Emblem 2/19 20 date code, so far.

Update 1st April:
A second SKU patch design number 404939 A-B Emblem 2/19 20 date code, has been found in JSC "Space Emblems" sales packets. Out of a batch of 80 Expedition 58 (3 crew names) patches, 23 have this new or error SKU patch design number.

I always like to include a description for each crew patch and can usually find them on collectSPACE or other internet sites. However for ISS Expedition 58 (59 and 60) I am unable to locate a description of the artwork.

I know the decals usually have a description on the reverse — could somebody post the artwork description on here?

You can also find artwork descriptions in the mission summaries which are usually available as pdf downloads from the Expedition's mission page.

Expedition 58's page is here. Look for the mission summary in the "Meet The Crew" section on the right.

Expedition 58's patch description:

Thousands of people worldwide dedicate their lives to the human exploration of space. As one team, we strive to learn, discover and pioneer for the benefit of all mankind. The Expedition 58 patch is a crew tribute to those thousands who stand ready every day committed to supporting this mission.

Central to the patch is the compass rose — a symbol of exploration past, present and future.

The passing of the International Space Station from darkness into light suggests that we are only just peaking over the horizon, looking forward to advancing human understanding of our place in the universe.

The crew of Expedition 58 are fortunate explorers ... never alone in their journey. Among the night lights on the Earth are glints of brightness – the global team and major control facilities that keep the space station on orbit and its inhabitants on track.

And as the explorers from centuries past used stars to guide their way, so too does the crew of Expedition 58. The stars on the Expedition 58 patch are their families, one star for each member. They shine on as a beacon of strength and a guiding light home.
