ISS Expedition 24 insigniaExpedition 24 will be the 24th long duration mission on-board the International Space Station (ISS). Expedition 24 begins with the Soyuz TMA-17 undocking in May 2010. Three new crew members will arrive shortly thereafter on TMA-19. - Roscosmos cosmonauts Aleksandr Skvortsov, station commander, and Mikhail Korniyenko
- NASA astronaut Tracy Caldwell
- Roscosmos cosmonaut Fyodor Yurchikhin, as well as NASA astronauts Shannon Walker and Doug Wheelock, who will launch in May 2010 on Soyuz TMA-19 and return in November 2010 on the same vehicle

Although this is a neat and simple patch, I keep hoping to see more ISS patches that show the artistry and awe of the old Skylab patches. I like patches with depth and detail without being busy and confusing. Take Skylab's study of the sun and other elements that are conveyed in those patches. Take mission objectives and incorporate it someway into the patch. Not just another creative way to show ISS flying around the Earth. Does anyone else feel the same or am I just living in the past? And why yellow in so many ISS patches although the purple is new? Just my thoughts. |

You are quite right about Skylab patches, (wait a bit more: there will be surprises and I hope you like them) but still, I like the simplicity and the wink to Star Wars of this one. |

I like the overall theme, but what's with the wide white border? Does that indicate that there will be a version with the crews' surnames? |

All recent ISS Expedition insignia have two versions: those without names and those with, the latter for official use after the expedition ends (to protect for delays and crew changes). |

As may have been evident by Bill's photo of the AB Emblem patch, the color of the final, official Expedition 24 insignia has changed since the first artwork was posted last month.This updated graphic displays both the final, official colors and the approved crew name-amended emblem.  |

A slight change to the name version of this emblem, as Tracy Caldwell Dyson's name is not hyphenated.(The earlier decision to not hyphenate Caldwell Dyson was retracted [for the patch only] as to avoid confusion that there were two people rather than one.) |

The insignia's official description: Science and Exploration are the cornerstones of NASA's mission onboard the International Space Station (ISS). This emblem signifies the dawn of a new era in our program's history. With each new expedition, as we approach assembly complete, our focus shifts toward the research nature of this world-class facility. Prominently placed in the foreground, the ISS silhouette leads the horizon. Each ray of the sun represents the five international partner organizations that encompass this cooperative program. Expedition 24 is one of the first missions expanding to a crew of six. These crews, symbolized here as stars arranged in two groups of three, will launch on Soyuz vehicles. The unbroken flight track symbolizes our continuous human presence in space, representing all who have and will dedicate themselves as crew and citizens of the International Space Station. |

In their crew portrait, the Soyuz TMA-19 crew is wearing the Expedition-24 patch
with names, but again, mistakes ended up in the Cyrillic characters. The Russian "i" in Kornienko should look like "a mirrored N" (as in the digital artwork), but they used a regular "N" instead. AB has admitted their mistake and corrected versions have been produced earlier this month. |

I wonder if they ordered theirs when we did? If they launch with those - then everyone will ask me for the incorrect ones back. Sorry.The corrected ones have arrived and the orders I received have been shipped. |

The deadline for our TMA-19 patches to arrive in Moscow, was the final week of April, so they could be sewn onto the Sokol suits in time for the spacesuit acceptance test. I think it is safe to assume that the same rule applied to AB Emblem's Expedition 24 patches. In that case, they were "hard" sewn onto the suits long before we discovered their mistake and a corrected version was available. So yes, the crew will probably fly with the wrong version. In my opinion, this is a direct result from AB Emblem's policy of not offering (affordable) prototypes (the bill for prototypes alone on the 10 patch ISS name set would have been $1750). We asked for this already in March, especially because of the Cyrillics, but it could not be arranged. We did the right thing Tim. I am very glad we rejected the first batch, not knowing yet that the crew might be stuck with the same thing. I am happy that we are offering something that at least shows we do care and are taking our jobs seriously. I am sure every serious collector would be proud to have the corrected version in his/her collection. |

During crew exams yesterday and today, Yurchikin's crew were still wearing the wrong "N" version on all suits, so the right version might not yet be available to them.Also, they were still wearing the Expedition 25 patch with the horribly drawn "P" and "CH" in Skripochka and the undercast "R" in Yurchikin on their blue flightsuits. It is sad to see that nothing was wrong with the original art. |

Yes, and the IV on the right solar array could pass for Star Wars: A New Hope (Episode IV) not to mention it reminds me of the opening credits on every Star Wars movie as the words scroll into the distance. Kind of fun to play with. |

Do we know who designed this patch? I haven't seen any reference to a name/s? Also is the "Star Wars: reference intentional? If so any particular rational behind it? |

During the preflight press conference, Robert asked a question about this. If I remember correctly, Shannon Walker answered that it was designed by a friend of her brother. |

Fyodor Yurchikhin and Mikhail Kornienko were wearing a special version of the Expedition 24 patch during their EVA on July 26-27, 2010. Yurchikhin was wearing a red EVA/VKD-25 patch; Kornienko a blue version. They were supplied to the spacewalkers at the request of Yurchikhin, who is a patch collector himself.  |

As AB Emblem is in the process of discontinuing a number of the ISS "no crew names" patches, (like most recently the Expedition 22 patch), the Expedition 24 patch was the previous patch to do this in October 2017. I am confused by A-B Emblem's actions. I am now aware that SpacePatches.nl ordered named patches for the 10 or so missions whose official patches lacked names, but the ones they're purging and swapping about are outside of those missions? I guess at this point it's so far out that it doesn't really matter, but if anyone uses A-B Emblem's stock as a visual guide to official patches for historical missions they might get confused. |
