ISS Expedition 44 mission patch

The International Space Station's (ISS) Expedition 44 begins with the scheduled undocking of Soyuz TMA-15M in May 2015. Three new crew members will arrive shortly thereafter on Soyuz TMA-17M.

ISS Expedition 44 will be led by cosmonaut Gennady Padalka. His crewmates, all of them flight engineers, include: cosmonauts Mikhail Korniyenko and Oleg Kononenko, NASA astronauts Scott Kelly and Kjell Lindgren and Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) astronaut Kimiya Yui.

Expedition 44 patch

The International Space Station is positioned in the foreground poised to study the Earth, Sun and cosmos that lie beyond.

Two members of the Expedition 44 crew will spend a full year on the ISS — providing valuable experience for future long duration missions to deep space. The 12 Earths represent the planet's position around the Sun over the course of that year.

Four of the Earths are silhouetted in sunlight representing the four month duration of Expedition 44. The nine stars in the background represent the nine individuals who will visit and work on the ISS during the course of the expedition, including the six-member crew, whose names are inscribed around the patch's border, and the three person Soyuz "taxi" crew.

The use of ellipses and circles throughout the patch reflect a theme of "completion" or "return," as investments made in the orbiting laboratory return benefit to the Earth and its inhabitants.

Posted a slightly larger version that I happened to have in my archives, on our Flickr page. I do not know who is the artist; all I know is that the design was arranged by Scott Kelly.

I love how the artist conquered the challenge of depicting a one year increment. Beautiful patch!

I guessing this is a case of something being right in front of your face and not being able to see it but the description states:
Four of the Earths are silhouetted in sunlight representing the four month duration of Expedition 44.
I don't see four. What am I missing?

The four versions of earth with the yellow band represent the four month mission duration of Expedition 44.

Ah ha! Thank you. I was looking at the "white light" and not the "yellow light". In all honesty I hadn't even noticed the yellow on the eastern most globe.

Overall a very striking design. Well done to all involved I its creation.

I like the drawing better than the patch. Looks like it lost a lot of detail.

When you say "serial number" do you mean the AB Emblem versions with their embedded labels with the "SKU patch design number" 233019 on with "Made In USA"?
These ISS-44 patches have been found with the following date codes on them;
  • 233019 Made In USA 03/03 (March 3rd 2014) Sample patch.
  • (233019 Made In USA 6/14 20) this crew batch has a single sticker on the cellophane packet only, none found on the patches.
  • 233019 Made In USA 03/1520
  • 233019 Made In USA 04/1520
  • 233019 Made In USA 03/2016
  • 233019 Made In USA 04/2016
  • No patches found with the new style "crown emblem" embedded labels on yet.
Updated February 16th 2023.
