Does anyone know if there is a picture showing the Apollo 11 astronauts actually wearing their Biological Isolation Garments with a Apollo 11 patch on it? |

This is the only Apollo 11 shot I have found with the crew in their BIGs and it shows them wearing only the NASA logo. |

In reference to the photo provided by the above link, each BIG seems to have a dark circular area on the right side (from the crewmember's perspective), but no patch is visible. In this view the crew can be seen wearing the actual BIG patch.

This is a good question. Whilst they certainly wore the patch on their regular blue jump suits whilst in the biological isolation trailer I haven't seen a shot that shows mission patches on the coveralls they wore before reaching the trailer. I presume that the latter are actually the Biological Isolation Garments.If this is true then maybe the whole Apollo "BIG" patch thing is a misnomer. |

The way I understand it, they did have an Apollo 11 patch on the BIG but in the helicopter they peeled them off (velcro) and gave them to the crew.If I'm wrong someone here will give the correct answer, you can be sure. |

This is why I brought this up, there was supposedly a special Apollo 11 Biological Isolation Garments (BIGs) patch, that the astronauts wore between the CM and the quarantine trailer when they returned to earth, but I've only ever seen it on their jump suits in the quarantine trailer. Interesting! |

I do believe Tim has it right. It's really difficult to make out but you can just about see there's a patch there in one of the shots of the crew in the dinghy during the recovery.Cut to the exit from the helicopter and all three suits just have a circle of dark velcro where the patches were. That means the design really was used by the crew on the Biological Isolation Garments, albeit only for a few minutes. |

I am sure that I have read somewhere that they did remove the patches on their BIGs, it may have been in Aldrin's, "Return To Earth". On edit: Just before we left the helicopter we ripped the Apollo 11 insignias off the isolation garments and handed them to the helicopters crew. It was spontaneous and a way of saying thanks. |

Does anyone know the fuller story behind the BIG patch example sold recently on eBay (221450268038) and originally from Novaspace?The seller's picture leaves covered some of the important language of the CoA and I don't understand if there were patches sold that had some special "worn status." The auction's older CoA write up differs from what came with the Collins-signed BIG patch I purchased from Novaspace (Astronaut Central) last year but the basic BIG patch story and Collins certification is common to both. More broadly, it's puzzling that these patches still sometimes fetch far above the going price from Astronaut Central. Are there different grades of Collins-owned BIG patches? |

It's just a regular Collins signed patch as far as I know. The buyer most likely assumed the patch to have been worn by Collins. |

I was leafing through this subject and came across this thread. I thought I would share pictures of the crew patch that Michael Collins sent me in 2006. I have mounted it in a frame with his note and a WSS photo.

Looking at more recovery imagery, it appears to me that all three astronauts had the Apollo 11 mission patch on their BIGs in the raft at the CM. |

It looks like Mike Collins is getting scrubbed down by Clancy Hatleberg, the Navy underwater demolition team swimmer. That is probably why the flotation device is backwards.

There were four crewmen in Helicopter 66, so I guess one of them did not get an Apollo 11 patch.

For whatever it's worth, both Commander Jones and Lt. (jg) Johnson, the pilot and co-pilot of 66, were interviewed with Chief Wood on live television about half an hour after the helicopter landed aboard Hornet. The three of them got out of the helicopter just before it was lowered to the hangar deck (Chief Robnett stayed aboard to ride the brake and generally tend to the aircraft). During the interview Dallas Townsend asked Lt. Johnson if he had any interaction with the astronauts. Johnson said that when he got out of the helicopter, one of them gave him a "thumbs-up" sign, and that was the only signal he got from them. (Naturally, that doesn't preclude either Johnson or Jones being given one of the patches by either Chief Wood or Chief Robnett after they were back aboard ship.) By the way, Dr. William Carpentier was also aboard 66 during the recovery to perform any initial medical checks or treatment, and of course he followed the astronauts into the MQF and closed the door. |
