Marvel's Rocket Raccoon and Groot star on space station payloads patch

Rocket Raccoon and Groot are headed to the International Space Station.

The Marvel Comics' "Guardians of the Galaxy" characters, a talking raccoon and a sentient tree-like creature, star on the mission patch representing all of the science payloads launching in 2016 to the U.S. National Laboratory on board the orbiting outpost.

"We're really excited to take this on because we really like the whole idea of doing something for the space station," said Darren Sanchez, a Marvel Custom Solutions project manager and editor. "The patch is a really cool idea and to utilize a Marvel character for the space station for CASIS, that's a very cool project."

Nice. Any idea if NASA is going to make this available to the public via AB Emblem?

NASA isn't directly involved (this is a CASIS patch, separate organization).

In the past, CASIS hasn't used AB Emblem to produce its payload patches and their distribution has been limited, but with the outreach goals attached to this one, we'll have to see what they have planned. (It doesn't look like patches, or decals, were distributed at Comic Con where this design was revealed.)

The patch is not as good as the decal.

I really like the patch and would like to know where to get one. My son likes Guardians of the Galaxy and maybe this will get him a little bit more interested in space!

Not sure if anyone else saw them, but I picked up two Groot patches off of eBay. They were not official, as they did not have the Marvel symbol, but they were very nice made patches and quite larger than the official. I have one of those and have to say, except for the lack of trademark, they were a very nice "variant."
