Astronauts debut mission patch for SpaceX Dragon crewed flight test

The first NASA astronauts assigned to fly on a SpaceX Crew Dragon commercial spacecraft have provided a first look at their mission patch.

Bob Benhken and Doug Hurley joined NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine and SpaceX chief executive Elon Musk for a press briefing at SpaceX's headquarters in Hawthorne, California on Thursday (Oct. 10). Although the event was largely focused on what work remains before Benhken and Hurley can safely launch on SpaceX's Demo-2 (DM-2) mission to the International Space Station — including another series of parachute trials and an in-flight abort test — the debut of the crew's mission patch offered a sign that they were at least one small step closer to taking flight.

We did produce these for the astronauts office and are talking to NASA to make sure we can sell these to the public.

Through the crew patch for the SpaceX DM-2 mission, we pay tribute to the dedicated teams of NASA and SpaceX that have worked hard toward returning human spaceflight launches to the United States.

Demonstration Mission-2 (DM-2) Patch Description

The return of human space flight launches to the United States after the end of the Space Shuttle Program and the incredible efforts of the men and women of NASA and SpaceX are the overriding themes of the crew patch for DM-2.

The patch is distinctly shaped in the form of the Crew Dragon and appropriate for the first crewed flight of this vehicle. The symbols of the Dragon capsule and Falcon 9 rocket are prominently displayed at the top of the patch. They pay tribute to the SpaceX Dragon and Falcon 9 teams that have dedicated years to design, develop, build and soon operate the human-rated system.

The familiar silhouette of the International Space Station is visible, flying across the North American night sky, and serves as the destination of this and future missions of Crew Dragon.

Both the NASA "vector" and Commercial Crew Program symbol are shown prominently to honor the efforts of the Agency and its Program to return launch capacity to the United States.

The silver star on the east coast of Florida highlights the location of Launch Pad 39A and the Kennedy Space Center from where humans have flown to space since the early 1960s and all Crew Dragon missions will originate.

The stars on either side of the crew's names represent their respective family members. Each has a wife and son who are incredibly supportive and important to the success of the mission.

Finally, the flag of the United States is on the patch to represent all past and future American human space flight endeavors and to honor the men and women who developed and flew them.

The Free Press: Tell us how you got tapped to design this patch?

Andrew Nyberg: My uncle, Douglas Hurley, is one of the astronauts assigned to DM2 (Demonstration Mission 2) which will be the first manned mission aboard a U.S.-built craft to the International Space Station since the retirement of the Space Shuttle. He was also the pilot of the very last shuttle mission that retired the program. He is married to my aunt, Karen Nyberg, who is also a NASA astronaut and has had two missions aboard the ISS. Once on Space Shuttle Discovery in 2008 and another six-month mission during Exp. 36 and 37, which flew on the Russian Soyuz.

When Karen was going on her second mission, she commissioned me to create a patch for her mission. The patch was designed and was even printed and ready for their trip. At the last minute the commander for the mission changed. The commander has the final say in the mission patch design and went with one of his own artists. So my design got tabled. However, it wasn't before they had already printed a bunch. So I at least got a few of those created patches and Karen did fly it alongside their official patch on the ISS. There is a version of it aboard the ISS to this day.

When Doug got assigned to fly aboard the Dragon Capsule, he asked me if I would be willing to create their mission patch. Of course I accepted.

L-3 weeks means training complete! It also means that the launch and mission memorabilia is coalescing...

Company co-CEO Andrew Nagle tells News 13 that for the first time since STS-135, the 135th and final mission of the American Space Shuttle program in 2011, astronauts are going to be launched into space from U.S. soil, and their patches will be going too.

"It kind of humbles us to go," Nagle says. "We're just making a patch."
