As part of Space Center Houston's new Independence Plaza, there is a new exhibit of a complete set of 135 space shuttle mission patches all flown on STS-135, the final flight of the program.

The patches are divided into three large framed displays, which are hung along the vestibule leading out to the plaza. In a recent post on Facebook, Blake Dumesnil (cS: IconDesign29) described creating the displays:

I designed each frame to represent an "era" from the Shuttle Program — the Early era, the Shuttle-Mir era, and the ISS era. This set of patches is the only one of its kind to be on public display and you can only see them at Space Center Houston as part of the Independence Plaza exhibit.
It is easy to walk by these frames and miss that the patches are all flown (especially if you are on your first visit and have the 747-shuttle waiting for you just outside the doors), so be on the lookout for them when you visit...

Beautiful! Those would make great posters, just to show off every patch!

Be interesting to find out just what these patches are — by that, are they vintage to the respective flight (e.g., was the STS-1 obtained around the time of that flight?); were they AB patches (or other manufacturer) available at the time of STS-135; were these flown before and not distributed; and in the case of at least STS-1, 3 and 4, were these the crew version patches or the ones available to the public?

All of the patches are AB Emblem manufacturer. Some are vintage to the time of their missions, some were of the type available in 2011.

On my next visit, I will take a closer look at the early mission patches.

Mine aren't flown, but here's my shuttle patch collection. Top row of five frames and the two outer frames in second row.

Beautiful displays in Houston, and a lovely "patch room" in Ireland too!

I have created a display showing flown patches from astronauts who have helped build the U.S. space program as well as help One Giant Leap. I ran out of room but have a great selection of shuttle and expedition patches.

All times are CT (US)
