Astronaut Wakata is to travel to the International Space Station (ISS) on the STS-119, 15A mission, and stay there as a flight engineer for the Expedition 18/19 crew. He will also serve as the JAXA Science Officer to conduct scientific experiments and other missions. Wakata will also engage in installing the "Exposed Facility" and the "Experiment Logistics Module Exposed Section" of the "Kibo," the Japanese Experiment Module, which are to be transported on the STS-127, 2J/A mission. The logo mark image represents the dawn of the new Japanese space development era that begins by his extended stay on the International Space Station. It is decorated by three words that symbolize Astronaut Wakata's thoughts on space: "Dream" (space is a place to provide us with dreams.) "Inquiring mind" (to apply your knowledge to technology.) and "Consideration" (teamwork is imperative for space development missions.) (Source: JAXA) Koichi Wakata recently spoke with collectSPACE about the insignia, crediting JAXA's public affairs staff with the design. I gave them the request to put a big space station and two components that I will be part of the assembly: the Kibo module and also the S6 truss.And those three words that I really liked: the first one is 'Dream', and 'Curiosity' and then the third one is 'Consideration' for others. I think those components are something that I felt very important working in this business for the last 16 years. Working with so many people in the astronaut corps, and the operations team, and together with Russians, Europeans, Japanese, Canadians. This is something I always cherish and I would like to continue to cherish that's why I asked them to put those three words and they were nice enough to do that for me. |

Very nice. I assume the red dot near the name signifies Japan. Any idea what the 8 stars or the movie-reel-like circular graphic mean? |

JAXA has yet to produce patches, even one for Wakata to wear on launch day. |

It's often very hard to get JAXA patches. Even at Tanegashima Space Center they didn't have any Kibo patches I was looking for. |

Remember back when each mission only had ONE patch? Now we've got the shuttle/Soyuz launch, EXP, individual crewmembers, and yes, even the ISS toilet has a patch...anyone want that one for their collection? I do like this design, though! |

Yeah, I really like this patch too, however, some patches over the years seem a bit redundant. |

I am not a big collector on personal patches, but I really like the color scheme and design on this one. Will this one be made available to the public for purchase? |

As I was reorganizing my collection recently, I realized that I had an updated version of this patch — Expedition 20 was added to the design.The text at the bottom border now reads, "STS-119 ISSE18/19/20 STS-127". Here are front and back scans of the patch in its original packaging:
